Printed extract from the Governor Order Books, 30 Nov 1910, explaining that Hazel has been absent from teaching duties to attend WSPU demonstrations in London.

At one WSPU demonstration she smashed windows in the West End of London, which landed her in Holloway prison alongside Pankhurst and Emily Davison. Our Governor's minutes note that she was absent from work to attend protests, and that the cost of hiring cover would be docked from her pay. 2/3

For #InternationalWomensDay tomorrow, we’re highlighting Gladys Hazel, an English teacher at Aston Girls' School, 1905-1910. After witnessing the poverty in the Birmingham slums and hearing Emmeline Pankhurst speak at Birmingham Town Hall, she became a suffragette. 1/3

A very well-behaved pooch sitting still for a photo, alongside its owner Thomas Townsend. 🐢

The photo features on a programme for a school reunion on 13th May 1905, to celebrate Townsend's 81st birthday. He was Headmaster of a KEVI Foundation elementary school for 30 years. #LoveYourPetDay

Love is in the air, and does anyone feel it as keenly as teenage girls? πŸ’˜ Here's a poem printed in the Handsworth Girls' School magazine in 1937 about "facially-perfect" Robert Taylor, an American film star. #ValentinesDay #SchoolArchives
