Unions Need to Show Solidarity With Disabled Colleagues People with disabilities can’t be an afterthought.

"Labor issues are, by nature, tied to axes of oppression. When we discuss labor, we also must discuss racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and, of course, ableism." www.teenvogue.com/story/disabl...

Fact Check: Trump's HHS Review On Trans Care Filled With Lies, Pseudoscience The review, which was made possible by an executive order calling transgender healthcare "mutilation," reached its predetermined conclusion on its May 1st publication date.

1. Today, the Trump administration's HHS Dept., under RFK Jr., released a review of transgender healthcare.

It has no authors. It pushes pseudoscience and conversion therapy. It does not follow a scientific process.

My fact check of the Trump HHS review.

New study reveals wealth inequality was never inevitable A recent study published in the journal PNAS is overturning traditional wisdom regarding the origins and inevitability of wealth inequality

A massive study of 50,000 households over 1,000 archaeological sites provides ample evidence that inequality is not a "natural" outgrowth of sophistication. Instead, it is a political choice. Which means, kids, that we don't have to choose it.

Interactive Map: Gender-Diverse Cultures On nearly every continent, and for all of recorded history, thriving cultures have recognized, revered, and integrated more than two genders.

I found this AMAZING resource that I think some of y'all might also be interested in. It's a world map that demonstrates that gender-diverse people have always been here and, in fact, have always been everywhere.

I've already had two federal grants terminated and face a 33% pay cut due to future terminations. It's painful, but not as painful as the conversations I'm having every day with brilliant trainees in graduate school and postdoctoral positions who see little future for themselves in US science.

Oh my gosh, thank you. This is so helpful. I was 100% thinking of UDL in conjunction with accommodations! I was just thinking about how hard it can be to get accommodations and UDL was appealing because it'd help out students who are unable to get accommodations formally. Thank you again! <3

As Bluesky has grown, I've seen a lot of backsliding on alt text. Please try to be considerate to others and include alt text with all of your images. It helps everyone. Indeed, in the "accessibility" setting in Bluesky you can set it to make sure you add alt text, which is a useful thing to do.

Does anyone have any hot takes on Universal Design for Learning/Instruction? I found a great article critical of UD, & I'm curious to hear others' thoughts

There’s a long history of the US using bogus “disorders” to harm and control people. The most egregious example: “drapetomania,” named by Dr. Samuel Cartwright in 1851. This was a “disorder” only enslaved people had, he claimed, a form of insanity that made them want to run away from slavery.

thank you to everyone adding ALT text to your images. It ensures that your posts are #accessible.

Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to include text when you're posting an image. Go to Settings / Accessibility, and check the box next to "Require alt text before posting."

Six Ways of Looking at Crip Time | Disability Studies Quarterly

I recently read this article by @ehlastigirl.bsky.social that talks about crip time as time travel which led me to think that disabled academics are constantly time-traveling between "academic standard time" and "crip daylight time," suffering from jet lag in the process

Hi! I've been gone for a bit! I traveled over my winter break, but I am now back at my desk working on my scoping review, which I finally realized doesn't have to be perfect.

Following people on social media who live what you're treating/researching is a great start to learning what it's really like, how you may be hurting the people you want to help, & how to actually help! Message me if you want recommendations! I feel weird tagging people & many aren't on bsky.

If your only experience with the people you're working with is in your role as a social worker, you're getting an incomplete picture.

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Social media is a great way that social workers can learn from the people we're trying to help, and I think this is so important when you don't have lived experience of your research/practice focus, whether that's carrying a mental health diagnosis, being unhoused, etc.

I sometimes feel silly talking about it in class but the people I follow on social media have taught me so, so much that has helped me grow as a person and as a social worker.🧵(1/4)

I've been harmed by psychiatric medication. I've also been helped by it.

I've been harmed by psychiatric diagnosis. I've also been helped by it.

All these things can be true at the same time.

There is space for people to share nuanced experiences of psychiatry.
