@ifyoucantwell.bsky.social Saw this post about Hacks on Tumblr--it's deeply true, and the rallying cry of Halt. Donna/Cameron and Joe/Gordon would all agree! #haltandcatchfire

Highlighted text form THE NEW YORKER The task that generative A.I. has been most successful at is lowering our expectations, both of the things we read and of ourselves when we write anything for others to read. It is a fundamentally dehumanizing technology because it treats us as less than what we are: creators and apprehenders of meaning. It reduces the amount of intention in the world.
Reminds me of this eternal Ted Chiang banger-
I volunteer at 826NYC, editing student stories for publication. I love the work and the organization. This is terrible.
The Pilgrim arc remains one of the best things I’ve ever seen in a longish lifetime of reading and watching much too much. It was brilliant.
Yesterday a kid I taught 4 yrs ago came back to visit & said my class helped him realize he wanted to pursue the humanities & now he’s going into graduate school in philosophy and … I really needed that win this week. Reaching out to a teacher who made a difference is always the right call.
Glad this got so many likes. Going to retweet it to cheer some other educators by reminding them that teaching matters and the humanities matter.
Wonderful to hear!
Question—is it any different for you, post-Joss revelations? I haven’t watched since any of that, and I’m kind of afraid of what I might see. I love Buffy enormously.
I haven't seen it in a theater since college, and it's probably my favorite movie (it's a cliche of a favorite movie, maybe, but I just love the writing). You're lucky to live in a place with theaters that show up movies--almost makes up for the wildfires.
I miss Chris.
Thanks for this.
OMG I FORGOT
before the walking lunges, while I panted in half-death from the squats:
Trainer: [grabbing weights, back turned] I want to see you do these with [mumblemumble]
Me: [stunned] you want to see me do them with ANIMAL GRACE?
Trainer: [staring] I said minimal brace
I did nothing but stream Gilmore Girls after the election, all seven seasons plus the Netflix revival. It marginally helped.
Donated.
@eccantwell.bsky.social Texas just passed a thing incentivizing schools to incorporate the Bible into ELA classes by paying them $60 a student. To add to your existential crisis, here's a link to their teacher's guide for a Grade 5 unit on Narnia. d1yqpar94jqbqm.cloudfront.net/documents/BL...
I hate when they take away things you were just starting to really enjoy, like your favorite TV show or democracy.
One of the most disappointing things in my life was when I actually got to try Turkish Delight and realized how disgusting it is. Edwin sold everyone out for THAT???
I often eat a buttered English muffin topped with sardines for lunch (don’t judge). Even now, 50 or so years later, I still think of that exact scene when I do.
Pete Buttigieg is out there, doggedly stumping for actual human beings. It’s a bad time to be human right now!
SO MUCH great Neil/Todd fic out there. Talk about tragic!
That's heartbreaking.
Me either.
Backed!
Just going through your (what are they here? Blueskies?) because I remember this site about once every two weeks. This is my favorite thing that you've posted.
@amalelmohtar.com @maxgladstone.bsky.social Someone wrote a fanfic for Yuletide (an annual exchange for small-fandom fanfiction) that's a crossover of your book, Star Trek Lower Decks, and Star Trek TNG. If either of you is a Trekkie, I think you'd like it. archiveofourown.org/works/52297468
Challenge accepted! 😀
Great article. I love Tumblr—it’s where fandom is, and it’s the place where I can anonymously be who I really am.
In the wake of Tumblr's downscaling announcement last week, I wrote about my favorite social media platform, and the ways both broader internet commentary and Tumblr's current owners have misunderstood the site in recent years: www.wired.com/story/end-of...
Not YESTERDAY'S ENTERPRISE??? That can't be true . . . Do you have no soul at all?
