the map of hungary, where blue is the opposition party TISZA and orange is orbán's party, FIDESZ - which is losing spectacularly, almost the whole country is a sea of blue with a few unfortunate spots of orange

A list of identical ink tests, on cold press watercolor paper.

For each test, I let the fountain pen ink dry for roughly 24 hours before applying watercolor paint. I painted over the words "ink test" with plain water, and then applied identical paint to everything else.

Platinum's Chou Kuro is by far the blackest black (even more so in person) but it also sheds a lot of pigment when you apply water to it. It made a very visible grey blur from the water.

Platinum's Carbon Black is much more waterproof, but the black ink is not as dark.

Pentel's black fountain pen ink was completely unaffected by water or watercolors, but it's only available in Pentel cartridges as far as I'm aware, so it's more expensive and would be a pain to use in any non-Pentel pen.

Diamine Forever Raven ink was also completely waterproof. It's not as dark as the Chou Kuro ink but it's darker than the Platinum Carbon Black. I have experimented with this ink elsewhere and found that it also dries to a waterproof state faster than any of these other inks - in my experience, it only needs around 20 minutes.

The last test was Diamine Forever Butterscotch, a warm sienna brown. It also performed really well. The Diamine Forever inks are mixable, so this could be mixed with the Raven to make a brown-black.

Overall I think the best option is the Diamine Raven. It's darker than Carbon Black and dries faster, and it comes in a bottle so you can more easily use it in any pen.

I've been experimenting with various fountain pen inks recently, looking for the best one to use with watercolors. Here are my results! I let them all dry for about 24 hours before painting over them with watercolor. My personal overall choice for standing up to watercolor is the Diamine Raven ink.

WORD FACT (February 1st)

“Tragedy” means “goat song” and nobody really knows why.

“Tragedy” comes from Ancient Greek τραγῳδία (tragōidía) = τράγος (trágos) [goat] + ᾠδή (ōidḗ) [song or ode].

I took this photo this morning, and I'm so in love with it - the timing, the focus, the colour. I can't quite believe it worked so well. The new camera definitely helped.
Also, she's so cute and chubby! #birds 🌿

my 2026 resolution is to stop talking about climate in terms of global mean temperature (will rise a couple degrees, sounds manageable, nobody cares) and start talking in terms of H bomb equivalents (holy shit, seems bad, WTF)
