Liver morphology and NAFLD progression in humans and zebrafish. (A) Zebrafish have a similar anatomy of the digestive system compared with humans. Tissue pathological processes can be studied for metabolic associated liver diseases. (B) The progression of NAFLD in humans and zebrafish. Lipid accumulation in the liver caused by obesity, insulin resistance and other factors leads to steatosis. Increased inflammation and oxidative stress promote NASH, and immune escape and fibrosis further lead to liver cirrhosis and even HCC. HCC, hepatocellular carcinoma; NAFLD, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease; NASH, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Image and text from Chang et al. (2023) Liver International
Today is #WorldLiverDay! Did you know #zebrafish have livers that function & develop hepatocellular carcinomas similarly to human livers? Researchers leverage the zebrafish model to understand & develop novel treatments for liver disease. Learn more: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... #KnowYourZDM

Confocal micrograph of a mechanosensory neuron with dendrites projecting broadly to cover the entire surface of the tail fin from a 6 day old zebrafish larva. This image is a composite of 5 adjacent high resolution confocal stacks to try and show the entire dendritic morphology of this neuron. Width of image is 1 mm.

There was a time when the president inspired pride instead of exhaustion. I miss that more than I can say.
I can’t wait for the America led by you @mayor.nyc.gov I’m a dreamer, but I also believe dreams can come true ✨️🙌🏼

Multiple peer reviewed studies in high impact journals have shown a substantial benefit of gender affirming care for trans youth. A heroin addict who cut off a raccoon's penis for "further study" says this care is dangerous. For busy Americans, it can be hard to know who to trust.
An illustration of an infinity symbol composed of the flags of all 27 EU countries. At the centre-right, a blue heart with the European Union flag is included. Below the symbol, the text reads: "From many languages, one unbreakable bond" with "one unbreakable bond" in bold. In the bottom right corner, there is a small European Union flag in a box outline.
Hello, Bonjour, Γειά σου, Hallo, Ciao, Здравейте, Ahoj, Olá, Hoi, Labas… 👋

(Academic) pedigree is a powerful facilitator of your career.
I was the only person in my family with a high school degree, and now I know the impact of having educated parents and an academic (and professional) network.

Gemini said A screenshot of a post on X by SEGM (@segm_ebm). The post text reads: "A new Finnish study reports that youth gender transitions (under age 23) did not improve mental health symptoms. For some youth, medical gender reassignment may have had a negative impact." Below the text is an image showing the "Results," "Conclusion," and "Summary" sections of a medical study. The word "FALSE" is stamped in large, bold, red letters across the center of the study text. A specific sentence in the "Results" section is highlighted in blue: "Among adolescents who underwent medical gender reassignment, psychiatric morbidity increased markedly during follow-up—rising from 9.8% to 60.7% in feminising gender reassignment and from 21.6% to 54.5% in masculinising gender reassignment."
This is going around on X, a new study by SEGM member Riittakerttu Kaltiala (the abusive head of a clinic in Finland) is getting picked up as proof that gender-affirming care doesn't work. The data actually shows something very different from what the authors claim. It's purposefully distorted.

Cutting science to invest more in war does not make the U.S. stronger. It makes us weaker. Science drives innovation, economic growth, health, and real global leadership. A country that believes in peace and diplomacy should not dismantle one of its greatest strengths.

Foundational work in #zebrafish can be credited to "fruitful" discussions between #Drosophila researchers such as José Campos-Ortega & Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard. By the late 1980s, multidisciplinary approaches honed in flies were finally applied to a vertebrate. #ZebrafishFunFacts 🧪

The director of Oscar-nominated 'The Voice of Hind Rajab', Kaouther Ben Hania, says the lead actor of her docudrama, Motaz Malhees, was prevented from attending this year's Academy Awards because of a travel ban imposed by the Trump administration.
This administration, the members of Congress who allowed this war to continue without real oversight, and a society that stays silent share responsibility. How many children must die? How many American lives will it take before this country reverses the course we found ourselves in? #TwilightZone
Good news today: @standupforscience.bsky.social is organizing rallies for science. 💪
Bad news:
Funded science is way down.
This is why I said wks ago the budget bill was “bad because it doesn’t go far enough.” How the science agencies are governed matters!!! This is killing labs. 🧪
Aged adults with extraordinary memory capacity – known as SuperAgers – exhibit a unique neurogenesis profile with a surprisingly high number of young neurons, according to a study published in Nature. 🧪 #Neuroscience

While the actions of those in power may try to pull women scientists backward…our children are already drawing the future differently.
Kids are now drawing scientists as women 🧪✨
The future will be different, because they already see it that way. 😍
