Here's my greatly reduced summer schedule for my Northern Michigan tour. I just can't justify driving all over the place this summer with the current situation.

Thanks, you know a show is bad when the promoter comes around an hour and a half early and tells everybody they can just close up and go home.

Here's a couple of Booth shots from what turned out to be my worst show ever. I've been doing shows since the 90s. I think I passed out maybe 20 business cards? One sign up for the email list. Lost about $800? Sold only two Originals. Never again. #SouthStreetArtFestival #Arlington #Texas

If you're in #Austin this weekend stop in at Stoney's! My daughter helped put this place together, runs it and is a bartender there. I'll be in Austin next week to check it out and stock up Jerry's art supplies after my show in Arlington Texas.

This is a great example of how the back painting can really change the vibe of the finished work. These are both 14x18s. Finish them both yesterday. Oil painting and oil pastels on an canvas panel. #Oilpainting #painting #landscapepainting #floral #wildflowers #art #artist

Spar. Marine quality is the best but it sure is expensive. I used to primarily use the Minwax brand. Remember the thing about Spar Varnish is the UV radiation in the sunlight breaks it down over time. So it requires constant upkeep depending on how much sunlight the furniture gets. Just like a boat.

A lot of the log furniture ended up on people's porches. Those all get exterior spa varnish. All the Cabinetry normally ends up inside.

Before I started oil painting full time I made rustic log furniture for 25 years from whatever I could find in the Forest around me. My work appeared in over 100 National magazines including a few features. #Furniture #woodworking

Unfortunately you cannot use varnish over oil pastels only oil pastel fixative. It's the wax that's used to make the oil pastel that becomes the problem. However they do make oil sticks. Which I used a few as usual on this painting. That's essentially just oil paint.

It was fun to paint too! Thanks for the share and kind words!

Yeah oil pastels make it tricky. You can get a fixative made for oil pastels but it doesn't really truly seal them and you can still get some smearing. Some artists wait about 6 months and hit it with fixative others just leave it. Others mount under glass. . So it's a bit of a coin toss.

Working on that right now. When that becomes available I'll circle back and give you a link. Thanks so much!

An Impressionist-style landscape painting featuring a vast field of vibrant red and pink poppies in the foreground. The flowers are rendered with thick, energetic brushstrokes that create a sense of movement. In the mid-ground, rolling green and yellow hills stretch toward the horizon. Two dark green evergreen trees stand tall on the right side against a bright, pale blue sky filled with wispy white and yellow clouds, suggesting a glowing sunset or sunrise. The overall mood is bright, joyful, and full of light.

"In His Cards" — An oil and oil pastel still life painting on stretched linen (24×30 in.) depicting a vase of sunflowers in the style of Van Gogh, accompanied by a green glass goblet and tarot cards laid on a table, including The Hermit and The Sun. A stack of face-down cards rests to the left. Warm yellows and oranges dominate the palette against a dark brown tabletop. Signed "Roman" in the lower right.

An impressionistic oil and oil pastel painting by Roman the Painter, inspired by Van Gogh's Red Poppies and Daisies. A rich bouquet of vivid red poppies, blue cornflowers, and white daisies with orange centers bursts from a dark terracotta vase set on a white-draped table. The background is rendered in energetic strokes of chartreuse and lime green. Loose, gestural stems and wildgrasses spill outward. Displayed in a gold wood frame against a dark background.

"After the Rain" — an original painting by Roman the Painter. A vibrant impressionistic field of coneflowers (echinacea) in full bloom, rendered in acrylics, oils, and oil pastels on a 16x20 canvas panel. The flowers display white and pink petals with vivid orange and yellow centers, set against a lush green garden and a dramatic pink and purple cloudy sky. Inspired by a walk in downtown Charlevoix, Michigan.

"Waiting for the Daylight" — a vibrant 24 x 36-inch painting in acrylics, oil, and oil pastel on stretched canvas by Roman the Painter. Towering sunflowers dominate the foreground, their heavy heads bowed and turned as if anticipating the sunrise. Bold, expressive brushwork and rich pastel marks build layers of saturated color — deep teals and purples in the shadows, fiery oranges and yellows in the petals, and unexpected pops of coral and red through the leaves. Behind the sunflowers, a dramatic sky transitions from a soft peach and pink horizon to swirling purple clouds and deep turquoise, suggesting the last moments before dawn. Distant mountains and hints of sailboats sit along the horizon line. The mixed-media texture is visible throughout, with the oil pastel adding a raw, gestural energy over the painted layers beneath.

Finished this 3x4-ft painting yesterday as the smoke rolled in. Remembering what non-toxic Spring Air used to be like. Painting from memory again. Recommended reading/listening "The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet" by Jeff Goodell (2023) #wildlandFire #art #painting

Two side-by-side oil and oil pastel paintings (each 16x20") by Roman the Painter, depicting the same interior still life from slightly different perspectives and color interpretations. Both works feature a white phalaenopsis orchid plant in a cylindrical striped pot on a warm orange wooden table, with a small bowl of bananas nearby. The left painting emphasizes a swirling Van Gogh-inspired yellow background with a decorative red and blue framed textile on the wall and a tiny white coffee mug on the table. The right painting opens the composition to reveal a window with a landscape view of blue water and green hills, and adds a patterned rug and striped textile on the right side. Both works are rendered in bold, expressive color with heavy black outlines in a Fauvist style, featuring deep purples, vibrant yellows, electric blues, and rich greens. Signed "Roman" in the lower center of the left panel.
