Here's the approach I ended up taking, commented up all nice! Googling around a bit told me that this is a variation on what's called a "sweep-line algorithm," and the time complexity is at best O(n log n) but depends greatly on the size of the active set during runtime.

Yeahhh I'm thinking O(n^2) is probably impossible... since in the worst case scenario, all of the boxes could be intersecting. There's just nothing to be done about it. Still, there are ways to optimize for most cases! Quadrants are a good idea, and my approach will use sorting and hash set alchemy.

and do so in under O(n^2) time complexity because im gonna be running this on a ridiculous amount of data. yay fun!!!

given an array of 2d bounding boxes in a 3d-ish space (objects with {left, top, right, bottom, z} properties,) produce a result array where each entry is itself an array of every bounding box object which intersects and is in front of the bounding box at the corresponding index in the input array
