Pretty light grey lumpy mite with thick 1st leg pair lined with spines on the inner edge like a metal rake
Rake-legged mite! Rake-legged mite! Rake-legged mite! New Mexico flavor π
I think I like it here (as a treat)

Tiny colony of slender dark red ants all piled on top of each other in a crevice of white rock
Close shot of a couple of the ants poking about on the rock
3 of the ants, trailing on the rock
Flipped a rock 1st day in New Mexico and oh hello there, tiniest colony of army ants! All of them fit in a tiny crevice of the rock.
Looks like Neivamyrmex nigrescens? I've only seen 3 other Neivamyrmex colonies, so this was a small treat.

Exactly like it.
Had to drive through a Border Patrol checkpoint yesterday in Texas and the guy stopped us, looked to see how white we were, and waved us through.
Clown shit.
Green bottle of grapefruit soda named Squirt Thirst Quencher
Hell yeah New Mexico, Squirt Thirst Quencher
I've had to go to work with bandages up both arms because it's a horror show underneath and nobody needs to see that
Omg, yeah, that really sucks.
There's no convenient places to get a rash, but somehow it's always in the worst place
OK maybe not The Worst Place, but
I've managed to not get it in any truly annoying quantity in a year or so, but that's with going nuclear on it: long sleeves and gloves, and changing my clothes and washing my entire arms with dawn dish soap literally right after finishing a trail.
It's frankly debilitating π«
Supposedly they're trying to make a vaccine for this shit and I'll be first in line (provided you're not already there first)
Goddamnit π«
Why does nothing really work
One thing about Kash Patel eventually being fired is thereβs no way to imagine what his face will look like upon hearing the news.
I got a 100 year old percolator from a yard sale years ago. Still use it on camping trips
If I die I die doing what I was put on this earth to do (peer under clumps of grass)
On my way to west Texas with a few arachnologists and Bug for a bug-finding mission for science in which my services were requested because my ability to find tiny creatures is somewhat notorious
I bet Goatse could open the Strait
He's got 2 strong arms, he can help
This is a big one. Stellar reporting from Sarah Fitzpatrick. To call it a must-read is an understatement: www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
Dark grey floofy lynx spider, legs perfectly bunched around her as she peers at you from a fence wire
Side view of the creature on the wire, a perfect lump of floof. She's grey, but with a wide nearly black band which goes across her head and extends to the 3 leg pairs folded beside her
A most handsome Floof Lump from yesterday, if needed π€
(Hamataliwa grisea)

She's a scientist writing and illustrating a field guide for widow spiders, she knows what she's talking about.
I never had a set vision of my wedding. I just didn't want to be stressed.
But a single search led me to the hellscape that is the wedding algorithm, a machine that perfected the art of making me feel weird, broke, and ugly.
Welcome to getting married in 2026, @samleecole.bsky.social writes.

Two small grey flies with very large heads which are entirely red compound eyes, mating in mid air with the male carrying the female

Small common nighthawk, a little sleepy looking mottled brown bird at rest high in a pine
The creature in silhouette from farther away, just a lump on a limb
The common Birdlump (Chordeiles minor).
I heard tiny screeches this afternoon, and followed them. π€
Swirly light blue resin ovals, with a scorpion exuviae embedded in the center of each one in clear resin
The scorps in the pendants glowing under UV
I made more Scorps π©΅
