15% of fossil fuels extracted each year are used to make fertiliser, run farms, process foods and transport them. In a very real sense our food is made from oil and gas.
We are about to feel a very painful food shock.

At 3.3% food inflation is already running ahead of general inflation in the economy. The Food & Drink Federation in the UK is forecasting that, even if the straits reopen permanently now, food inflation will be triple that rate by the end of the year.

The Persian Gulf is deeply embedded in food distribution as well as fertiliser and agri- chemical production. Cost increases arising from the war will in the short term push an additional 45m people into acute hunger according to the UN.

Everyone is guilty of thinking that the consequences of supply shocks in the carbon economy are only felt at the petrol pump. That’s mostly a failure of us lot in media to explain how oil seeps into everything. Nostra culpa
PV providing 589 watts, 345 baseload usage, battery charging at 244 watts.
By 8:15am today solar was generating 70% more than our baseload usage.
On a cloudy day, in England, in April!
Good. 👏
'Ed Miliband will double down on Labour’s commitment to net zero in the face of the Middle East conflict this week, insisting that as fossil fuel prices soar "the era of clean energy security must come of age".'

This is a different type of climate misinformation ... not climate denial, but attempts to misrepresent indigenous peoples rights and opinions in order to (mis)appropriate their land for climate-related projects often associated with the energy transition.

A wildlife disaster unfolds alongside the human tragedy in the Strait of Hormuz
@greenpeace.org reports Iranian vessel Shahid Bagheri, stuck by a US warplane in early March, is still leaking oil near the Strait, with nearby wetlands at risk:

The Strait of Hormuz + surrounding seas are critical ecologically as well as politically.
Coral reefs, whale sharks, dolphins, endangered Arabian humpback whales, seagrass meadows supporting dugons, islands harbouring green turtles - just some of the creatures + ecosystems in + near the Strait.

Image of oil
Prof Martin Grossell describes the impact oil slicks can have on sea creatures:
“Many of the compounds found in crude oil will target heart function and respiration". Animals' immunity can be lowered, their nervous systems disrupted so navigating, hunting or escaping predators is more difficult.

“Crude oil, or even refined oil, is a very complex mixture of thousands of chemicals." These chemicals can be absorbed by fish through their gills or directly into the tissues of corals.

Many people in coastal communities in + near the Strait rely on the fish + shellfish the mangroves, reefs, seagrass meadows in the region to survive.
Oil + war, + wars for oil: devastating to people, devastating to wildlife.

🎉A huge CONGRATULATIONS to @sarahfinch.bsky.social, who has been awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize.
It can't be overstated how much the work of Sarah and @wealdactiongroup.bsky.social has transformed the odds for stopping new oil and gas in the UK.

50+ countries will attend the landmark Santa Marta Conference to
strengthen international cooperation & accelerate phasing out fossil fuels. Climate disasters & wars in Ukraine & the Middle East have highlighted urgent need to strengthen energy sovereignty by transitioning to green, renewable energy
It's a such a powerful, well funded fossil fuels industry in Australia. Great info re: why below. #AusPol
Imagine your community owning its own source of electricity. There are various ways this works but the commonality is that it gives renters and people who can't install panels on their homes access to local renewable energy and cuts costs.
Somehow, I still cannot believe that this is an actual headline in 2026.
Burning PLASTIC for fuel... I mean, can it possibly get any worse?!
www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04...
The fuel crisis could last for a while. It’s time for a new approach to fossil fuel use – end it
Let's base our energy systems on renewables, and stop burning stuff

Greenpeace International @greenpeace.org has initiated the first test of the European Union’s anti-SLAPP Directive by filing a lawsuit in Dutch court against US-based pipeline company Energy Transfer.

I can understand why the tech firms would want this. But why would the EU Commission succumb to this? What upside could there possibly be?
AI and Bot accounts. I've come across DOZENS of MAGA accounts with over 100k followers over the last few days who are from Africa, South Asia, etc.
Next time you see a big MAGA account, look where they are from and post the screenshot in the comment section for people to know they are Bots.
The Greens are opposing solar farms being owned by foreign companies, not solar power.
Rightly so. Why should overseas owners and investors profit from an indigenous renewable resource instead of the local community and country?
Have we learned nothing about "energy security"?
Data couldn't be clearer. Countries want electrotech when faced with yet another fossil fuel disruption.
"Shipments of batteries, electric vehicles, and solar cells an annual increase of 34%, 53% and 80%. All three exports rose from February levels as well."
