Our sessions provide a rare and vitally important space for people to express themselves, without judgement and to be real about their own situation in a space where there is no need to explain yourself. This week your donation has double its power. Please donate today,... @biggive.bsky.social #Arts

This year sessions have been supported by live BSL and captions. A few years ago, arts became accessible to people at home but since the lockdowns finished, there are fewer avenues for people to explore their creativity from their bed or their sofa.

I know from personal experience of #LongCovid that creativity is a way of learning to make sense of my condition and new way of life. Our programme Chronically Creative is an online creative session facilitated by freelance artists all with lived experience

Here's Why: Since joining the world of people living with long term health conditions in 2020, I've been pioneering ways to keep the creative spark alive amongst people who make and experience art at home,

Hallo blue sky World! I'm returning to social media for my biennial ask for cash for @spare_tyre, the arts charity I lead. We need to raise £4k in a week and for that we need £2k from individual donations. Can you help us? donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05...

Been a bit quiet of late. Been learning at the sharp end what happens when a hacker gets into your life. Update your passwords now. Stop what you are doing and do this now. Prevention is much better than the other thing. #OnlineSafety.

More sad news out of Florida: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission today voted to approve annual Florida black bear hunting seasons set to begin this December.

Hunting could do real damage to Florida’s recovering population of black bears.

Happy birthday youngster. There is a third state where you recapture what’s gone and live for now. It’s often available in glimmers and takes practice to claim it. Nearly 58 and working on it.

For the next four weeks, we are lifting the 9.30am rule on older and disabled people’s bus passes.

We hope it will help people over the summer as well as provide valuable data on whether we have the capacity and finances to make it permanent.

Please help spread the word! 🙏🏻

What the closure of USAID is really costing the world The abrupt withdrawal of American funding has stranded millions of patients and will be felt by countries for years to come

“The Lancet paper found that spending by USAID from 2001 to 2021 had saved roughly 92mn lives, 30mn of them children. It predicted that, unless the abrupt funding cuts were reversed, roughly 14mn additional people would die in the five years to 2030.”

Wondery fired 110 producers today. The latest in a bunch of cuts that have decimated long form narrative podcasting. I have noodled for years now on the way forward and I really see independent shows as the only way. Some of my producers lost side gigs from this. It’s really hard out here!

More than fifty private schools shut since Labour put VAT on fees Department for Education defends ending tax breaks for independent institutions, after parents lost a legal battle at the High Court this year — view map

The headline here should say:

"Number of private schools increases by 35 - showing fears of an exodus to be unfounded".

(The increase is mentioned way down the article.)

A credible Times report in 2025 would say "private schools carry on .... fears unfounded so far ... number of schools up ... pupil numbers down marginally, as predicted by IFS, but not matching fears of sector + media" and then discuss the reasons the sector could swallow a marginal change

A truly remarkable resource. ⬇️ Please check out 'South Asian Britain' a free database that explores South Asian lives in the UK. It felt really special to research some of the entries, even for the very short time I worked with this amazing team! @remakingbritain.bsky.social @qmul.bsky.social 👏 👏👏

What have we become? Where is compassion? These bigots do not represent the majority of UK people....but how do we counter their hateful attitudes?

Important (if depressing) to remember that the kind of authoritarian race-baiting expressed by Jenrick on Today (eg presenting all refugees as sexual predators and promising to deport all of them) was taboo in British politics for decades. Yet I doubt any Tory will publicly criticise him

Unsolicited Writing Advice, no: 167: SELF PUBLISHING.
As trad publishing becomes increasingly unsatisfactory for many, with advances plummeting and authors being asked to do more and more of what was once the publisher's job, more and more people are looking at self-publishing.

The youngest's nursery's fees are going up 15% from Sept.

Which will mean, after tax, once I've paid for her to be in nursery I will take home around £25.

And we wonder why young people aren't having children and struggling to get on the property ladder 🪜

The data provided by thousands of respondents since 2020 presents a clear - and deeply concerning - picture of the situation in which UK arts freelancers find themselves.
