He was a great support to me in my own times of trouble. One of those uncommon people who became wiser and more empathetic as he aged. Thank you, Colonel. We didn't listen to your generation, so It's our turn to fight the fascists now. You saw it coming, as did I.

A man who grew up poor in rural Eastern Tennessee, was promoted from private to bird colonel, became something of a financial whiz, unlearned his racism and misogyny, and quit drinking, but still played a mean game of golf and bridge.

He went on to provide Medical Administration support in newly liberated West Germany, and saw a lot of things I don't know how he lived with. He died at almost 101, cogent until the last few months.

I've been thinking about this poem by Langston Hughes recently and although it was published in 1931, it remains relevant as ever.
