Yep, same stretch of shoreline cliffs.

Thanks, Amelia! Yes, rock can be so cool:) I hike around there often, mainly to see the amazing cliff formations. This is where I grew up...but as kids, we didn’t give these cliffs a second thought. Now, after living away for years, I find these cliffs mesmerizing. Another of nature’s gifts.

I do exactly that:)

They’re a beautiful, sweet breed! There are a good few around, but they aren’t as common here as you might think.

Thanks. This is at Adams Cove, Conception Bay North.

Adams Cove on the North Shore of Conception Bay. If you ever plan to visit there, I can give you directions to these cliffs.

And thanks!

Photo of a large rock face comprised of many thin layers. The photo shows jagged layers overlapping other layers, looking like large, pointy saw teeth. The rock face is grey with some lighter streaks.

I don’t, but I have some from this area. This area has much less species diversity than Mistaken Point because it’s from after 550 million years when a mass extinction occurred. Here‘s a pic from my recent hike in this area.

That’s right. It’s seafloor from the late ediacaran period…just under 550 million years old.

Absolutely. Is there an email address I can use? Easier than typing here on Bluesky. You can dm the email address

Yep, constantly falling off due to our numerous freeze thaw cycles each year. Here’s a photo taken nearby showing rock that’s fallen off in recent months.

Yes, this was seafloor at one time. Sedimentary rock that’s heaved vertically. The sediments were deposited over 500 million years ago.

Yes it’s just a little over a 1.5 hour drive from St. John’s. There’s quite a lot to see on that stretch of shore(the west side of Conception Bay).

Yes, it’s not a quarry.

1 day ago 0 0 1 0

Yep. It was ocean floor originally.

Wow, that’s an incredibly beautiful area! You’re very lucky!

After you park you can take a trail toward this area. The stretch of cliff is in the red circle. Feel free to DM or text (709-770-7922) for more details. This is actually where I grew up, and I still visit there regularly.

Happy to. It’s in the community of Small Point-Adams Cove, in Conception Bay. At Adams Cove you take this short lane toward the rocky beach where’s there’s room to park a vehicle or two. Continued…

Yes it’s a trail that runs alongside these seaside cliffs. But you can get down on the rocks and hike along as well.

It‘s 540ish million year old rock. From volcanic ash, I think. It contains fossils from the late Ediacaran period.

Not a quarry. Lots of rock falling off freeze-thaw cycles. we have many dozens of freeze-thaw days from November to May each year. Here’s a nearby section of these cliffs that shows the volume of shedding that occurs each year.

Photo of a grey, sheer cliff face. The surface looks like it’s comprised of puzzle pieces. Blue sky is visible at the top of the photo.

Coastal hiking in Newfoundland, Canada is a treat for the eyes. Another view (last week) of the seaside cliffs near my hometown in Conception Bay North. #hiking #trail #ediacaran

Photo of a tuft of moss that’s green-yellow in colour. The top down view shows that the moss plant tops are star shaped. The moss leaf tips have hairs extending out from the tips. The moss tuft fills the entire photo except for a sliver of light grey rock on the right side of the photo.
