still can’t believe that given the choice between “bountiful, free, clean energy from the earth, wind, and sun” and “poisonous dead animal sludge price sensitive to global politics” we keep choosing the latter

My unique $100k R&D ocean floor gravimeter was lost at sea through unfortunate events. No funds for ship time for recovery so my PhD supervisor mortgaged his house & sent me. No pressure.

I was in the lab with the ROV team when it showed up on sonar. Cheering erupted over the radio from the bridge.

Just watched a video of Andy Weir describing neutrinos and he says they quantum tunnel through pretty much everything and I don’t feel this is an appropriate use of ”quantum tunneling”

Anyway why ask a woman physicist when you can ask a dude novelist

So the big studios are abandoning the US and turning the staff workers into contractors to get out paying for healthcare.

The United States is losing one of its defining industries because of not having universal healthcare and the people are going to be even more vulnerable to the industry.

Eric Daugherty • @EricLDaugh • 1h
• JD VANCE RESPONDS TO POPE LEO:
"When the Pope says that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword - there is more than a THOUSAND year tradition of Just war Theory."

"In the same way that it's important for the vice president of the United States to be careful when I talk about matters of public policy, I think it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology."

"And I think that one of these issues here is that there has been - if you're going to opine on matters of theology, you've got to be careful, you've got to make sure it's anchored in the truth, and that's one of the things that I try to do, and it's certainly something I would expect from the clergy, whether they're Catholic or Protestant."

I’ve given this a great deal of thought, trying to come up with the perfect joke for this moment, and this is what I have so far -

POPE LEO: our religion teaches that this war is bad

VANCE: wow, who died and made YOU head of the Catholic Church??

POPE LEO: well, you should know, you were there

Right now there's nothing on the front page of CNN, The Guardian, or the Washington Post about today's landfall of Super Typhoon Sinlaku in a US territory. The NY Times only has this short blurb after scrolling all the way to the very bottom of the page.

it's hard to get retractions to stick because you can't un-have an emotion. a lot of people developed angry feelings for Chappell Roan over this, and now that they know she didn't actually do it they're even MORE angry at her because they resent being told they repeated wrong information

thatch finials were, historically, often used to indicate something about the resident- a hint at their occupation or the number of children, sometimes.

so anyway i have some questions, namely, where is this house so i can figure out who thatched it and offer them a round of applause

Right? It always amazes me to look back at the first day photos! Luckily I worked at a spay/neuter clinic at the time and was able to take her straight in to work with me and the vet said that if I hadn't she probably wouldn't have made it. She's the best girl too, so polite!

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

More context on this #Artemis II image:

* This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right

* The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon:
