Grace O’Malley, an adult female Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, has been in rehabilitation at the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research since March 7th after stranding on Pirates Beach

If you encounter a sea turtle on the beach or accidentally hook one while fishing, please call the 1-866-TURTLE-5 hotline. This allows our permitted GCSTR team to respond quickly and provide the care necessary to rehabilitate and protect sea turtles along the upper Texas coast.
We also welcomed Dr. Joe Flanagan, who recently retired from the Houston Zoo. Over a remarkable 40-year career, Dr. Flanagan has contributed profoundly to sea turtle medicine and conservation, and we are grateful that he will remain involved as he continues pursuing his passions.
We were honored to have special guests join us for these releases. Pam House and Steve Bowden continue to provide support in every way possible to the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research.
Through a collaborative treatment plan developed alongside our veterinary partners at Houston Zoo, each patient received specialized care, allowing them to recover fully, regain strength, and return to their natural habitat.

Our undergraduate research intern, Mia Ziebold, is presenting her student research poster “Hematological Assessment of Health Status in Loggerhead (C. caretta) and Green Sea Turtles (C. mydas).”

Our stranding season has been especially busy, with many sea turtles coming in due to a variety of causes, including hook and line injuries, entanglements, dredge-related incidents, and more. We couldn’t have done it without this amazing team.

It has been a demanding week for our Rescue, Recovery, and Rehabilitation teams. A dozen sea turtles with injuries and illnesses resulting from boat strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and capture within a chemical intake canal as well as deceased sea turtles have washed up in need of response.
