This is v good advice! Even if you’re not in the US.

At Pentagon worship service today, Pete Hegseth again read a violent prayer to bless the Iran war. But this time his prayer was apparently borrowed from 'Pulp Fiction.' I promise I'm not writing for @theonion.com now:

Brilliant.
NEW—I got an exclusive excerpt from a USAID whistleblower's new book that made me gasp multiple times. It details Trump's dismantling of the humanitarian aid agency & his team/DOGE's shocking ignorance to public health.
'Into the Wood Chipper' by Nicholas Enrich is out tomorrow. Read excerpt here:
I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵
A useful piece on the US blockade…

A reminder that the Vietnam peace talks lasted from 1968 to 1973; the "marathon" Iran talks took place in less than a day.
I think the short attention span of Trump and everyone around him is a part of our trouble.
If it’s such a ‘gold mine’ why did the 14 year period of the last Conservative government, throughout which it pursued a policy of issuing licenses and maximising oil and gas production, end up being defined by austerity and the worst wage growth since the Napoleonic era?
Watching them move through a decaying orbit, hit the atmosphere and then deploy the Tunnocks Teacakes is pretty fab
Excellent rundown of the hodgepodge of statements that are being used to create a "back to coal" narrative. In sum, most range from meaningless to inconsequential, with one with uncertain significance thrown in.

I'm worried. I sat with things for a bit today to try and see through the immediate fears, but I still land largely here: there's no obvious offramp, and the men behind it are not of a caliber which allows for humiliation.
Does that automatically mean nuclear use? No, but… we should be serious. 1/x
The biggest story in the world right now is that the president of the United States is a demented old man who takes pleasure in torturing and killing people and is committing crimes with impunity. And yet most legacy media outlets are too cowardly to tell it like it is.
Spoke with President Trump. He told me the conflict should be over in days, not weeks but if no deal is made he’s blowing up the whole country with “very little” off the table. "If happens, it happens. And if it doesn't, we're blowing up the whole country,” he said. I asked if there’s anything off limits. “Very little,” he said.
Again, I don’t see how you can read this as anything other than Trump trying to normalize the idea of using nuclear weapons
Each year nuclear adds only as much net global power capacity as renewables add every two days.
Historical averages? (Depends on the formality of the writing/ audience).
We interrupt your regularly scheduled doomscrolling for this phantom timeline cleanse.

Some first-rate science writing: For this story, @jdrakephd.bsky.social carefully read our recent paper and then we spent a very fun 90 minutes or so talking on zoom. His article that gets right to the heart of our model, explains it clearly, and then explores why it will matter in the future.
Just when you thought he couldn’t be more insane…..

Hundreds of licences granted for new North Sea oil & gas projects under the Tories have so far produced just 36 days’ worth of gas. Yet more evidence, were it needed, that a crisis caused by fossil fuel dependence can’t be solved by drilling for more fossil fuels in the North Sea
"When China crossed 1,500 kWh of electricity consumption per person, coal was 10 times cheaper than solar. Today, as India reaches the same threshold, solar plus storage costs half as much as new coal."
Wow.

Great news - renewable energy hit a record today in the UK.
A surge in wind and solar generation helping to blunt the impact of the price shock of the war in Iran.
Gas generation was just 2.4% of the UK's power mix.
