yeah it's 3d spring simulation, and those represented the particles that act as vibrating agents with a mass. so they'd force themselves back to their resting state as you excite the springs, creating the vibrations, hence the sound.

yeah tbh I think usefulness is kind of beside the point when you go this route :D although for example anukari has been doing a pretty good job of pushing it into a more practical space. we built something very similar ages ago, but it was impossible to get any meaningful musical sound out of it lol
