What determines Israel’s war on Lebanon? Until and unless Donald Trump ends the Gulf war, Lebanon will remain hostage to Israeli domestic politics

Ahead of direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, my assessment remains that the outcome for Lebanon depends on the ongoing U.S.-Iran contest of wills and "negotiation through fire" in the Gulf:

A respite in the Gulf, but will it stop the slide to world war? The boundary between multiple localized wars and world war is becoming blurry

The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran has had major worldwide impacts, but still tends to be analysed in isolation from the global geopolitical context.

So my recent post asks:

What determines Israel’s war on Lebanon? Until and unless Donald Trump ends the Gulf war, Lebanon will remain hostage to Israeli domestic politics

One day after Israel killed 254 people and injured more than 1,000 others in Lebanon in ten minutes, its Prime Minister Netanyahu agreed to direct peace talks with Lebanon.

My latest article raises the following question:

Satellite Imagery Reveals the Israeli Demolition of Khiam Detention Center The prison in southern Lebanon where thousands were held without charge has been razed to the ground, confirming the fears of a researcher who spent years building a virtual reconstruction of the site

"What are memory, reconstruction, and the power of the image when the place is gone?" Satellite images show Israeli excavators demolishing Khiam Detention Center in southern Lebanon, where 5,000+ were once held and tortured, reports @@baydoun.nl

The NY Times article on Israeli demographic engineering/ethnic cleansing in Southern Lebanon is rightfully getting a lot of attention.

I'd just highlight it represents a continuity, not only with Israeli strategies in Southern Lebanon in the 1980s, but with Zionist strategies in the 1948.

India’s Digital Health Push Is Overworking Its Front-Line Women Multiple apps, unpaid data work, surveillance tools and gendered constraints have turned health care digitization into a second, invisible shift for community health workers

"The digital transformation, which promised to streamline health care, has instead added an unpaid second shift — this time on the accredited social health activist (or ASHA) workers’ phones."

Israel’s unending attacks in Lebanon push country’s population to the brink Four weeks into the US-Israeli war on Iran, many in Lebanon are suffering under yet another Israeli aggression.

I visited Lebanon's suicide prevention hotline center, where calls have doubled in comparison with 2024's mass displacement.

Tough choices for Arab Gulf states Dragged into a war they did not want, Arab Gulf states are paying a heavy price, with little control over the course of events nor hope of a stable outcome once the war ends

Damned if they do, damned if they don't: Arab Gulf states are trapped between taking hits from Iran or responding vigorously and being hit even harder - in a war they didn't want in the first place

Escalation risks in the U.S.-Israel-Iran war A game-theoretic assessment suggests the likeliest outcome is a war that gets worse without anyone quite deciding to make it so

A careful assessment of trajectories in the Iran war based on war-gaming, well worth reading carefully for its insights into complex dynamics, not simply its projections:
