Mit einer Reichweite von weit mehr als 8.000 Kilometern sind mit HALO erstmals Messungen auf der Skala von Kontinenten möglich: alle Regionen von den Polen bis zu den Tropen und den abgelegenen Gebieten des Pazifiks kann das Forschungsflugzeug erreichen. Die maximale Flughöhe von über 15 Kilometern ermöglicht auch Messungen in der unteren Stratosphäre, außerhalb der Tropen.

Vorbereitungen für den Messflug.

Das Bild zeigt die Flugdatenauswertung am PC. Fein verteilte, mikroskopisch kleine Partikel in der Luft – Aerosole – beeinflussen nicht nur die Luftqualität, sondern verringern auch den Anteil des Sonnenlichts, der die Erdoberfläche erreicht. Dadurch wird die Luft am Boden weniger warm. Darüber hinaus ändern sie die Strahlungseigenschaften und die Lebensdauer von Wolken. Diese mikrophysikalischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Aerosolen und Wolken sowie ihr Einfluss auf den atmosphärischen Energiehaushalt und den Wasserkreislauf können nur durch Messungen in der Atmosphäre genau bestimmt werden. Dies kann durch vergleichende Messungen in verschiedenen Regionen der Atmosphäre erreicht werden: in relativ sauberen maritimen Regionen, in der Atmosphäre über dem Regenwald oder in durch Industrie oder Waldbrände verschmutzten Luftmassen.

HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft) am Hangar in Christchurch, Neuseeland. Die Flugkampagne HALO-South dauert bis Mitte Oktober 2025 an.
