Key point - "Congress must work to eventually repeal the untenable cost shift altogether. Payment accuracy is an important measure of SNAP’s performance, but a program isn’t successful if it’s highly accurate while failing to reach those who need it."

The Trump Administration: "Eat real food."
Also the Trump Administration: "$10-$13 a month for fruits and vegetables should do it."
Last week, I outlined questions I would be looking to have answered when the President’s budget is released.
Now that we have the full proposal, we can now answer them.
Hint: It fails to offer affordability solutions to make life more affordable while raising the risk of hasty, harmful cuts. 🧵
📢Message from my colleague @katiebergh.bsky.social how the President's budget continues to make groceries LESS affordable for low-income families.
HHS wasted taxpayer dollars to find that people enrolled were eligible, a new KFF article shows:
kffhealthnews.org/news/article...
🎯And SNAP doesn't just support low-income families struggling to afford groceries — it supports the entire food supply chain from the grocery store back to the farm.
"A farm bill does not support our nation’s food security if it ignores the needs of the millions of people across the U.S. who cannot consistently afford to put food on the table." - @tyjonescox.bsky.social on last night's vote to advance a deeply flawed farm bill: www.cbpp.org/press/statem...
Moving forward, Congress must prioritize the urgent need to address the harm already unfolding across the country from these devastating SNAP cuts, starting with the looming unfunded mandate that threatens to take away food assistance from millions of low-income families.
A farm bill doesn't support our nation’s food security if it ignores the needs of the millions of low-income people who can't consistently afford food. It doesn't deliver for rural communities if it leaves behind the 1 in 7 rural households who use SNAP to buy groceries.
Last night, the House Agriculture Committee advanced an unacceptable farm bill that turns its back on the millions of low-income families struggling to afford groceries in the wake of the Republican megabill’s unprecedented SNAP cuts. This bill should be rejected.
Nothing says "laser-focused on affordability issues" like House Republicans proposing a farm bill amendment that would kick a single parent with two kids earning just under $35,000 per year off SNAP for "earning too much."
About 1 in 7 rural households use #SNAP to put food on the table, a higher share than in metro areas. By failing to address H.R. 1’s devastating SNAP cuts, the House Agriculture Committee farm bill ignores the needs of low-income rural families who need SNAP to afford groceries.
"This requirement doesn't increase employment or earnings. It just cuts people off."
Figure showing the change in the number of SNAP participants between November 2023 and November 2025.
Preliminary USDA data show about 700,000 fewer low-income people received SNAP benefits in November vs. October, another huge one-month drop. This likely reflects disruption from the shutdown & the Republican megabill (H.R. 1)'s unprecedented SNAP cuts starting to take effect.
Speaking of policy choices: Next week, the House Agriculture Committee will mark up a farm bill that does nothing to address H.R. 1's devastating SNAP cuts as more & more low-income families lose the basic food assistance they need to afford groceries.
Given that USDA just happened to post SNAP caseload data that's typically released on Friday afternoons on a Tuesday morning ahead of the State of the Union, a reminder👇
You were right @Katie_Bergh! "Lifted" is being used to describe taking food assistance from families, children, and veterans thanks to the $187 billion cut to SNAP and other harmful policy decisions.
H.R. 1’s SNAP cuts have already resulted in hundreds of thousands of low-income people losing the food assistance they need to afford groceries. This farm bill proposal would make further misguided policy changes while ignoring the urgent need to address this harm.
With even deeper cuts on the horizon from HR 1, the top priority for any farm bill should be to restore & strengthen #SNAP. Today’s farm bill proposal fails to address this urgent need. www.cbpp.org/press/statem...
The House Agriculture Committee’s farm bill ignores the needs of low-income people struggling to afford the rising cost of groceries, many of whom are already losing food assistance under the harmful Republican megabill’s (HR 1) unprecedented #SNAP cuts. This is unacceptable.
After Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance at #SuperBowlLX, everyone’s talking about #PuertoRico. But here’s what many might not know about how federal policy affects the territory 🧵👇
The harmful Republican megabill redistributes trillions of dollars to the wealthiest households, while making it harder for families and communities with low and moderate incomes to afford food, health care, and other basic needs. More from @brendanvduke.bsky.social: www.cbpp.org/research/fed...
📢@Katie_Bergh "Many of the Trump Administration’s policies are making it harder for low-income families to afford basic needs. As more people lose SNAP in the coming months due to the megabill's deep cuts, these affordability challenges will only get worse."
Too many people have fallen victim to the fed gov’ts violent immigration enforcement & too many families and communities have been forever harmed by the dragnet
In the wake of another horrific shooting death in MN by federal immigration officers -on top of wrongful detentions, violence, & fear there & across the country- it is appropriate for the Senate to use the budget process to push for critical protections for people & communities.
🎯 How much states will be required to pay for SNAP benefits is based on administrative errors identified from October 2024 to September 2026. HR 1 passed in July 2025 and guidance from USDA came months later. Not a lot of time.
Today, NGA joined a coalition of orgs representing state and local agencies in sending a letter to Congress to request the inclusion of targeted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP) provisions in the anticipated January Continuing Resolution. Read it here: www.nga.org/advocacy-com...
This “affordability” framework for a second reconciliation bill (i.e. a “Second Big Beautiful Bill”) follows the same structure as its predecessor:
1.)Making it harder for Americans to afford health care, food & groceries.
2.)Tax cuts for rich people. 🧵
New analysis: Recent circumstances outside of states’ control are driving up the costs states will face under the Republican megabill, putting food assistance for low-income families at serious risk if Congress fails to act. See the impact in your state:
