Recently I've been re-reading some stories. One I return to is @maryrobinettekowal.com 's "Marginalia". I am enamoured of the idea behind it (cw: snails). It's a perfect example of taking a what-if, exploring it, AND how it would impact people in that world.

• Success is separate from satisfaction with the work. Sometimes they line up, but just as often they don't.
• Success has more to do with luck than any of us would like to admit, but persistence and being great to work with gives you the most spins at the roulette wheel to see how it goes.
This is excellent and it brings up something I am noticing, especially amongst Xennial men: AI overuse*. It's like they are half drunk and are mad I won't drink the magic Kool-aid. It's cooking their brains and they are clueless.
(*all AI use is bad, I am referring here to them using it nonstop)

I'm making one last push to let people know about this online talk -- sponsored by the British Library in conjunction with their current exhibition on fairy tales. The live stream starts at 7:30 tonight, but if you buy a ticket *before* the event you can watch it any time over the next 7 days.

It turn out she has a name, which is weird.
Thank you, Connie Ballmer.

you look so happy in that picture! I hope it's a good cut that you can maintain at home too.
I hate Al and I refuse to use it Peter, if you don't use Al a bunch of super rich men will lose a lot of money I already said I hated Al Harry, you don't need to sell it to me
Absolutely incredible.
NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman, who commanded Artemis II, took this footage from the far side of the Moon with his iPhone.
Watch with sound on.
I know titling is hard but I keep seeing people fall back on this and I *promise* you can come up with something more creative, more memorable, and more unique to your story if you put your mind to it
There was a great tumblr post someone made after doing research for Regency women's names. They dug through a lot of records and had some great information - 62% of the women had 1 of 5 names. It's bonkers and a really fun read.

I do love Lilya and Maret! I'm working on a (not smutty) story of theirs, but at some point they're going to demand a novella (or longer) out of me. One cleric of the goddess of knowledge and her very put-upon mercenary bodyguard, surely *nothing* can go wrong?
There are many reasons I believe in the separation of Church and State and "you can't disagree with the head of state, that's against theology" is probably the most prominent "absolutely not" scenario.
an illustration of a medieval woman spinning wool into thread using a spindle
All hail the almighty distaff and spindle.
Counterpoint: I use em dashes with abandon and will not let "AI" steal them from me. I was overusing them first and will continue to do so long after "AI" is a crater in our financial system, or our merciless overlords, or both
I'm going to ask again. Because timezones, and maybe me asking noon my time was not so great timing 😞
god grant me the audacity of a Catholic convert sincerely telling the Pope he’s wrong about theology
NEW: A new pre-print study offers the first causal evidence that outsourcing reasoning tasks to AI can rapidly erode users' independent performance AND their will to persist despite difficulty.
"People’s persistence drops... they’re also not willing to try without AI.”

There's a kid who studies piano at the same time my eldest has guzheng practice. We walked in and they're playing the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. I still want Eldest to learn Golden, but I can only find it not-quite for gayageum. Converting piano to guzheng is something I can't do or I'd try!
