"Do you realize how much water and power it’d take to replicate the average writer’s narcissism, self-loathing and despair? It’d drain the Indian Ocean. You could light up Times Square for a year. We can’t afford it."

“There is a massive difference between faculty in their own departments determining that programs are no longer viable — which has been the usual way program closure has been initiated in the past — and such closure decisions being made solely by administrators."

There is a staggering gap between Trump's confidence in his extraordinary talents, so that a great power's strategy can be safely left to his mood of the moment, and the harsh reality of his limited grasp of the meaning of the events unfolding around him. As he starts from the assumption that there is none more powerful, his default tactics always involve bullying. When the targets are unresponsive all he can do is either double down, with ever more lurid threats, or else move on, as if there was never an issue, without acknowledging defeat.

But we also replaced one Khamenei with another; empowered the IRGC; did nothing for the protesters, killed over a thousand civilians, including hundreds of children and lost at least 13 US service members, alongside over 500 wounded); left Iran with enough highly enriched uranium to make 10-12 nuclear weapons; gave it greater incentive to try to build them; irreparably tarnished America's reputation; did lasting damage to the US and world economies; depleted our arsenal of scarce missile-defence interceptors; diverted valuable military assets from other regions; empowered Russia with an oil price windfall; triggered further conflict in Lebanon; further eroded domestic and international law; and may have left Iran in control of the most valuable waterway in the world, in a position to earn tens of billions of dollars in revenue per year through tolls, while holding the world economy hostage.
So @jderbyshire.ft.com asked @philgordondc.bsky.social if the Iran war is the US’s Suez moment. He said no, but then pithily and pitilessly sums up how it has been a comprehensive strategic failure. Oof!

Never mind that I died inside when I heard Gorsuch say in Trump v Barbara arguments that there weren't any immigration laws in the 1860s. Taps new book 👇 in which I document the over a century of first colonial then state-level international and domestic migration laws before federalization.
I don't have much to say for politicians. Jennie Lee is one of the few exceptions.
In Scotland anyone earning under £25k can keep learning with OU for free, but the English loans for second degrees has narrowed massively recently. A lot of disappointed people in the Facebook group. It really does change peoples lives and keeping the door shut to them through high costs is so sad.
Focus on private credit (is) ‘partly because of high-profile alleged frauds, partly because it looks unusually concentrated in lending to firms that are at risk to AI-disruption, partly because there are lots of people trying.. & partly because it’s all so opaque. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
