The Sunday session “History Under Fire” organized by HARPP was a sobering series of reports from the field on the challenges we currently face. Grateful to the organizers for facilitating this important conversation.

Image of Jolly Ranger on black tree background. Text reads, “GUTTING America's Best Idea. The Trump admin is once again proposing massive budget cuts to the National Park Service for FY2027. We need your voice.”
Image of trees behind black background. Text reads, “This administration is spending ~$1 billion PER DAY on war. Meanwhile, all 433 national parks sites operate on just ~$9.5 million per day. 3-4 days of war spending equals 1 year of national parks. This isn't about affordability, it's about priorities.”
Image of trees behind black background. Text reads, “You -THE PUBLIC- value protecting public lands, wildlife, and cultural history. But the FY2027 proposal includes a $736 million cut (down 25%) to the National Park Service.”
Defunding America’s Best Idea.
The proposed FY2027 budget includes a ~25% cut to the National Park Service, along with major reductions to other public land agencies.
You addressed it like a pro!
Not at all. I started clapping to show support for what you said. Hope that wasn’t out of line. 😆
It was a great session and very much enjoyed the important discussion.

They can remove the signs…
Thanks for the heads up.

Article from the Philadelphia Inquirer about the Trump administration‘s removal of panels at the president‘s house in Independence National Historic Park and note that says “We the people can handle the whole truth about our nations history and leaders.”
…but they can’t stop us from teaching the history.

Great idea! I'd like a conference where we go for walks in the park and just chat. So maybe this can be the post-cooking session.
Pleased to login to BlueSky and see we are finally having this conversation.
How many profs at elite schools could teach FIVE classes per semester
All surveys (maybe 1 200 level class)
No TAs, ever
15-35+ students per class
Widest range of academic preparation imaginable
AND serve on committees
AND avise students
AND continue to research/publish w/ little $
Anyone who teaches more than a 2/2 and manages to publish a book (often with little or no research funding) should get alllllll the awards.
While everyone wants you debating if the economy's up, the Trump regime's soon to declare a ban on trans youth healthcare nationwide, Ohio is trying to outright ban us from public life, & Tennessee just passed a registry to publicly list every trans person in the state.
