been thinking about my career options lately. a lot of my dream jobs are only possible after getting a lot of other experience and i need to think about how to get that experience. also considering if i actually perhaps want to stay in academia

Remarkably, flu all but disappeared from circulation for the first two years of the COVID pandemic, & one entire influenza B lineage went extinct.
But did COVID have a lasting impact on patterns of other viruses?

A top coronavirus vaccine adviser at the CDC has resigned, citing concerns that she could no longer help vulnerable people after officials rescinded recommendations to immunize children and pregnant women.
Vaccines are vital. Masks (n95 or p100) are community care.
And we can also clean the air! Quoted post is re hospital air. This article is re school air.
We have the tools.
Make them use them.
Contact local officials, schools, hospitals, etc. Demand health & disability justice. #CleanTheAir
I’m a dentist from India. The fluoride debate in the U.S. horrifies me www.statnews.com/2025/05/24/f... via @statnews.com ews
The "debate is not only about chemistry — it is about context. The privilege of questioning fluoride’s role exists only where other forms of care are already accessible."
Extract: Covid-19 is distinct from influenza in several ways. First, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has undergone a mutational evolution different from that of influenza; Covid vaccine-induced immunity may not require annual updates for the most clinically meaningful health outcomes but may perhaps be triggered by significant antigenic shift. Second, Covid-19 has summer transmission that can facilitate the conduct of randomized studies that continue to apply in future time periods. Third, natural immunity from Covid-19 against severe disease appears robust.
Let’s dig more into some of the claims about SARS-CoV-2 vs flu evolution in the recent NEJM piece outlining US approach to COVID vaccines: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

I'm really curious to see if anyone has more up-to-date stats on MMR vaccination rates as well as other factors like travel. Also, while the spread has slowed nationwide, we're still in the middle of outbreaks in places like Kansas. #episky
The CDC's confirmed measles cases have only increased by 23 from last week, and there's only been 5 confirmed in Texas since May 1st. Most reporting I've seen emphasizes the sheer number of total cases, but imo we should focus on the slowdown for the past few weeks which is definitely a good sign.
I feel like this is not their primary goal—they are absolutely lowering longevity but this is too indirect to be true. The key is that this decrease in longevity specifically manifests as a disproportionate increase in disease burden for marginalized groups, something they are definitely aware of.
