Whenever I talk about abolition, someone inevitably brings up victims' rights. And I agree, people who experience violent and terrible crimes should have rights. They need care. They need therapy. They need community. They need protection.

None of which is provided by our system of cages.

One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

“1 mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, 1 mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.”

The #’s may vary, but the truth is the same.

You're watching the hypnotic movements of a flock of Red-billed queleas, taken by Johan Vermeulen in Zambia.

They're the most populous species of non-domesticated bird, with global population estimated at 1.5 billion.

So why move like a rolling cloud?
Let's talk about "Africa's feathered locust."

A little armored one / turtle rabbit in the wild

A little armored one / turtle rabbit in the wild

The word armadillo is borrowed from Spanish and simply means “little armored one.” But an even better word for an armadillo, in my opinion, is the Nahuatl ayotochtli. It means “turtle rabbit.”

Viral diversity and zoonotic risk in endangered species A growing body of evidence links zoonotic disease risk, including pandemic threats, to biodiversity loss and other upstream anthropogenic impacts on ecosystem health. However, there is little current...

NEW! 🦠🦧 We revisited a perplexing paradox: do wildlife really pose less of a risk to human health as they become more endangered? Turns out, it's sampling bias all the way down: conservation risks correlate with disease surveillance blindspots. 🔓 esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

I stand with unionized Starbucks workers, who are on strike across the country right now for better wages and working conditions.

Until Starbucks strikes a fair bargain with its workers and ceases its union-busting behavior, I'll continue to boycott the company.

The Johns Hopkins University will no longer charge tuition to undergraduate students from families making under $200,000 a year, the school announced Thursday.

The university will also cover room and board and other living expenses for students whose families make under $100,000.

University President Ron Daniels announced the change in an email to the campus community, writing the new policy will recruit “the best and brightest students to Johns Hopkins irrespective of their financial wherewithal.”

Means-testing may be less than ideal, but this is certainly very far along the right track.
