There's a rich scope for imagining what all the animals would do in this world. Dolphins? Such party animals ๐Ÿ˜…

Nationalisation doesn't have to cost anything, especially where companies give themselves a low value. And many policies represent long-term thinking to realise savings in a variety of ways.

I think everyone can see that Labour isn't going to enact the deep changes needed.

This is good, but the problem goes way deeper. Too little, too late springs to mind.

Ooh, yes, that's not good. Something atmospheric but clear is good, leaving the reader pondering as they embark on the story. Which, as the author of this post says, still needs to begin strongly.

Definitely no to the worldbuilding or backstory infodump. Intrigue - possibly, if it's done well ๐Ÿ™‚

Pretty cool day out with half a million others in London. Lots of people took pics of my sign ๐Ÿ˜Š

A copy of This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell

What a wonderful read. This book's habit of changing perspectives was a bit frustrating at first - because it drew me so closely in to each POV that I didn't want it to switch. The way each part of an emotional story is gently teased out with different voices is masterful.

Others can advise on how to get more sales - it's all good. I'm personally more interested in your comment about being a good writer. You should be proud. I hope you keep going - give your characters a life and get your ideas out.

You should still be proud that you're a good writer. Sales don't change that. Successful writers are often churning out their work (I'm not knocking that). Keep learning the craft, work with others in writing groups, maybe work with a coach or editor if you haven't already, and keep enjoying it.

World's longest coastal path opens in England to the public The King Charles coastal path will allow walkers right of access to the entire coast for the first time.

Did King Charles III pay for the coastal path bearing his name? Didn't think so. Apparently we did.

Israel has a right to exist with equal rights and freedoms for everyone within its borders, regardless of ethnicity. To say otherwise is to support apartheid. This isn't advocating 'obliteration'.

Whereas Democratic Socialists understand we need to understand the material conditions driving people to the right, show them how they're being misled and offer material solutions.

Perhaps this betrayal of his own beliefs explains why Keir Starmer now looks (and sounds) like a diabolical alien has inhabited his body and is torturing him from the inside

Whatever you need to tell yourself to stay loyal to the most catastrophically unpopular PM pretty much ever, including Liz Truss. To justify losing an uber-safe seat, even for a by-election.

This week I've had a man confidently correct me wrongly several times, and I'm wondering if the English language needs a word for that. To co-wrong someone?

It's been three and a half years, and still when I see a sentence such as 'The Queen arrived...' I think, 'From beyond the grave???!!!'

Happy 'Andrew's been arrested' day to all those who celebrate.

What sparks a story in your head? I've realised different people have different things in their heads before they start writing. For me it's often 'I wonder what it was like living at a time when...' Then I add some characters, and then I might think about writing something down!

Updating my WIP: I think the story is basically sound, but needs more stakes. And there's one thread that's resolved too easily - it needs another obstacle. I love writing scenes but find plotting harder - getting a second opinion has really helped.

I've picked up my novella-length WIP again. I don't think it's totally pants (but who knows?) and I'm now drowning in scribbled and disorganised notes. Time to put them down and keep writing. That's the fun part, anyway!
