The United States is destroying itself | Rebecca Solnit The daily news can’t adequately convey the administration’s sabotaging of our government, economy, alliances and environment

“The United States is being murdered, and it’s an inside job. Every department, every branch, every bureau and function of the federal government is being fatally corrupted or altogether dismantled or disabled.”

Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

Palantir is in Britain too. Headed by the Nazi Oswald Mosley’s grandson. The menace is closer than you think.

Palantir is a menace to society. Its "Manifesto" reads like a very bad Hollywood science fiction dystopia movie.

As a person who believes that AI is to be scorned, not utilized; it is useful that Tech bros like Alex Karp post their hideous manifestos publicly. This screed exalts "some cultures" as creative, others as not. It calls for universal military service, AI weapons and dominance through fear. Evil.

The FBI guy is on a paranoid bender and won’t leave his room.

The War guy quotes bible passages from Pulp Fiction.

The Health guy collects raccoon dicks.

It’s an Idiocracy on steroids.

When the Roberts Supreme Court killed the Clean Power Plan, it swallowed the poison that would eventually kill it too by creating the Shadow Docket.

"In the memo, [Roberts] weighed no potential downsides of his proposal and considered no alternatives."

Democracy will not come
Today, this year
  Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.

I have as much right
As the other fellow has
 To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.

I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I'm dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow's bread.

     Freedom
     Is a strong seed
     Planted
     In a great need.

     I live here, too.
     I want freedom
     Just as you.

Langston Hughes

Of course not. But Ted Lasso is a type of show. Like Downton Abbey is. They stay in a lane. Lasso was incredibly quirky. Great characters. (Shrinking does similar weirdness) The 3rd season did fall flat. The romances weren't happily-ever-afters, yay...redemption arcs for villains like Nate, meh.

This was the entire point of Ted Lasso. It wasn't supposed to be Breaking Bad. There was plenty of loss nonetheless.

Today is the 251st anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops.

I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III.

Remind you of anyone?

Tech billionaires want Christians to believe in AI For Peter Thiel and JD Vance allies, the tech right is framing AI as a moral—even divine—mission.

“What becomes incredibly useful for these people to do is to present their products as the answer to the meaning of life.”

Inside Silicon Valley’s efforts to market AI as godly.

FIFA faces new crisis as SoFi Stadium workers in LA threaten strike action The union UNITE HERE Local 11 has made a series of demands to FIFA and voiced major concerns about ICE agents around World Cup venues

Thousands of workers are threatening to strike at the Los Angeles World Cup stadium.

The SoFi Stadium plans to host two of the three US Men's World Cup matches, but now 2,000 cooks, servers, bartenders and more may strike.

Their main issue? ICE being present at the World Cup.
