Doppler cloud radar
Weather radar
Did you know the difference between a weather radar and a cloud radar? Weather (or rain) radar detects raindrops (2 mm) so it only works when there is precipitation. Cloud radar is much more sensitive and it can detect tiny cloud droplets (0.02 mm) even when there is no rain! #cloudwatch4science
🚀 New paper out in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics!
We present a machine learning approach for aerosol type classification using multiwavelength lidar data from the EARLINET network.

🚨🚨 A similar event is currently being observed over Granada! The image reveals an intense dust layer within the boundary layer, accompanied by a more widespread but less intense smoke presence extending throughout the entire atmospheric column.
More information about this event can be found in the following links:
🌍 The plume didn’t stop there and continued across the North Mediterranean, reaching Italy, the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey. This image by Copernicus Sentinel-3 corresponds to May 18, and a clear plume can be observed covering the whole Island of Sicily.
🛰️ Satellite imagery tracks the aerosol plume back to central Canada (Manitoba) on May 13, coinciding with an intensification of wildfires in the area (earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/15429...). The plume then crossed the Atlantic, reached the Canary Islands, and arrived over Europe by May 17.
Aerosol Optical Depth and Ångström Exponent measured by the Sun-photometer over Granada show a sharp increase in both aerosol load and AE values on May 17. This indicates a dominance of fine particles, likely from biomass burning given their abundance.
🚨 An unusually intense aerosol signal was detected over Granada by our ceilometer, peaking around 9 km above the city! Such strong signals are rare at this altitude and indicate the presence of an elevated aerosol layer.
With the combination of #GRASS and #GRAINS (GRAnada Ice Nuclearing particle Spectrometer) we can study the INPs concentration in the #atmosphere.
Stay tuned for results!
For the first time at #SNS station, we are sampling ice nucleating particles (INPs) with the use of #GRASS (GRAnada Samplying System).
INPs trigger the formation of ice crystals in #clouds.

SNS station (Mojón del Trigo Observatory, Sierra Nevada, 2610 m.a.s.l.) This station is one of the main facilities of the Andalusian Global ObseRvatory of the Atmosphere observational (AGORA) platform and provides information on aerosol, gases and clouds with in-situ instrumentation.
All set for the summer campaign at #SNS station (Mojón del Trigo Observatory, 2610 m a.s.l.) from #AGORA. This campaign is framed in the #NUCLEUS project, which aims to study the role of #aerosol particles in #cloud formation.
