NHS surcharge is an illuminating example of a policy that has been designed to meet public concerns about migration impacts. Hiking it from £200 to > £1000 means the NHS is v likely making a surplus (esp on students). I doubt many people have heard of it

Chart showing gross value added per hour worked with employment measured by Labour Force Sruvey and Real Time Indicators (2023=100): UK there are some early and encouraging signs that the pace of productivity growth has begun to accelerate. This is not fully apparent from the official headline data, however, which are based on the Labour Force Survey (LFS) that shows relatively flat employment levels over the past 18 months. On this measure, hourly labour productivity grew by 1.1 per cent in the year to Q3 2025. But when we adjust for past under-recording of employment by using payroll data, with productivity growing by a tidy 3.1 per cent over those four quarters, as much as in the previous seven years put together. The rise in productivity since the recent post-pandemic trough in Q1 2024 has been a blistering 3.4 per cent in six quarters, a rate not seen since before the financial crisis.
Despite gloomy mood music around prospects for the economy, there are some early and encouraging signs that the pace of productivity growth has begun to accelerate.
