Here’s one of the audition pieces I did of Jack Nicholson to get likeness approval for the 1989 Batman movie adaptation! Happy birthday to him!

I wrote about the manga of Hiromu Arakawa, and how she balances the consistent dual purposes of her writing, her art and even her public-facing persona: www.crunchyroll.com/news/feature...

This is one of the best pieces of pop culture writing I've read in the past couple of years. These excerpts are great but you need to read how the build to that last one. Goddamn. Thank you @awalrusdarkly.bsky.social and @popheist.com

The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

Sydney Sweeney is 100% going to be Char Aznable. Nothing else makes sense--unless it is 100% a new story.

Get ready, nerds.

Another episode of Witch Hat Atelier that kicks off with a beautiful attempt to breathe life into the magic that Shirahama's illustrations imply, rather than merely redrawing them to lesser effect. The match cuts between sigils and the corresponding elemental magic spirits are soooooooo good

I don’t know that I’ve ever known less what is happening on a page.

Star Trek The Original Series scene. We're in a CORRIDOR! A room door is open, and we see two crewmen spilling out into the hallway in red and blue uniforms. They are otherwise indecipherable tho because they are entirely enveloped in a big cloud of smoke. It's pouring out all around them and into the hallway area, like there's a Phish concert in there. Closed caption reads, "[COUGHING]"

I know just enough about the Silmarilion to see two references to Tolkien here.

At @io9.com, I spoke with Rick Veitch, Tom Mandrake, Vince Locke, and more for an oral history of the most heretical DC comic of all time, now rising from its tomb after 40 years.

Zhinxy's account may have been mysteriously suspended, but we cannot let Superman Day pass without her cherished copy of Lois Lane #80. It was altered by a previous owner so that the iconic Curt Swan superman is a beatnik saying "Hey, baby, cool off!" She would save it in a fire.

Absolutely incredible.

NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman, who commanded Artemis II, took this footage from the far side of the Moon with his iPhone.

Watch with sound on.

I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

The man was an absolute workhorse in the '90s with tons of animated roles that he was an absolute legend in. Peter Pan & The Pirates, the Mighty Ducks cartoon (go figure), Freakazoid... heck, Tim Curry was almost The Joker. No role was too small for the guy, and more power to him for it.

I was trying to figure out: Capcom games have great but sometimes kind of austere graphics so why is the art direction in Pragmata so wild compared to almost every game they’ve made in the past 10 years? And then I looked up the director and now it all makes sense

a woman in a maid costume is opening a door next to a woman in a white dress . Alt: Maid Sook-hee opening the doors for her mistress, Hideko

Fucking me up that THE HANDMAIDEN is ten years old.

Still one of my fave movies. It's got everything: con artists! queers! A dumbass heroine! a wounded femme trying to manipulate a situation that strangles her! Yearning! POV fuckery! Cinematography out the ass! Sexy bathtub scene!

Peak cinema tbh

Just sobbed hardest I have since my mom died in 2020.

She missed these trials by a few months.

One of most ruthless cancers. Hard to fathom that maybe she'd still be here.

I feel such a hole inside.

In case you're wondering if we should fund mRNA research instead of another stupid war ... yes.

'Superman' Too Woke? MAGA Would Have Hated the First Man of Steel Movie, Too The 1951 film 'Superman and the Mole Men' finds the Man of Steel lecturing a bigoted mob - and taking away their guns

It’s Superman Day, and while I make fun of Batman Day and Star Wars Day(s), I think Superman still doesn’t get enough respect as a character.

I wrote this last year to celebrate Superman’s long history of being *ahead* of the moral curve. Not behind it. Not even representative of the times.

A bunch of artists will lose work, the flow and immersion for the reader is ruined, the mangaka's vision is butchered...and they'll probably raise the price on consumers anyway.

but at least a corporation made more money 😀
