Hey everyone! #SPAN is offering proseminars, starting with a two-day sequence on MRI methods. Come sign up!

Would love to get some colleagues at the intersection of NLP and CogSci. Reach out if you have any questions! Deadline: 31-Jul-2026
Delighted to share our discoveries about one of the brain's neurotransmitter systems:
www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Together with colleagues at the @alleninstitute.org, we have learned a lot about a tiny cluster of neurons in the brainstem locus coeruleus (LC) that releases norepinephrine (NE). 1
Our reply to 11 commentaries on our article ("Rethinking category-selectivity in human visual cortex") is out in Cognitive Neuroscience! Thanks to @susanwardle.bsky.social @maryamvaziri.bsky.social Dwight Kravitz @cibaker.bsky.social and all who contributed! 1/x www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
@socphilneuro.bsky.social is offering a seminar series that's free to SPAN members! Anyone can become a SPAN member, so anyone can join the seminars! register here: philandneuro.org

๐ฃ๏ธ Language is widely distributed throughout the brain ๐ง
In a recent correspondence in @natrevneurosci.bsky.social, we suggest that there is no 'language network' in the brain. What appears as such is an inevitable illusion created in part by the methods we use.

Love it! Foraging rocks
Writing philosophy is like 'thought archaeology'--each rewrite and revision dregs up more and more of the underlying thought process that produced the text. Good but tiring!
Applications are open for the Junior Theoretical Neuroscientists Workshop which will take place July 21-24, 2026 at the Center for Computational Neuroscience, @flatironinstitute.org
Travel, lodging, and meals will be covered for accepted participants.
Application deadline: April 15, 2026
Preprint out arguing that we should build the techology to translate (compile) molecularly annotated connectomes into dynamics. I think this is incredibly important. arxiv.org/abs/2603.25713
Hey philosophers and neuroscientists! Check out what #SPAN is offering: proseminars in neuro methods! Great for intro or to get up to speed
Check out these awesome early career researchers!
Check out all the great projects!
This is unbelievable. For an administration that has perpetrated shocking acts of stupidity and cruelty, this one might be the dumbest
Huzzah!
On the invitation for a commentary on Mazviita Chirimuuta's The Brain Abstracted, I had the pleasure of writing on equating the brain with computation.
The Ontological Reversal of Computation and the Brain
in Philosophy & the Mind Sciences.
Below see what I agree & disagree with in the book.

Our latest publication grapples with how the brain could implement gradient descent by sending learning targets top-down, gating plasticity with dendritic inhibition, and updating synaptic weights with biologically observed learning rules like BTSP.

If you're interested in emerging ideas in neural interfaces, I humbly suggest my lab's latest: www.nature.com/articles/s42...
Neural interfaces create dynamic interactions between the brain & devices. This means mean we need new engineering approaches beyond typical ML to "decode" a static brain
do you count philosophers
I did (almost) every problem in this textbook. It took years
neat!
What are the systems in neuroscience that we really have something that we can call โexplanationโ at all relevant levels, other than reflexive feed-forward like circuits.
Here are a few that I would argue are getting there. Obviously not complete explanations but genuinely satisfying.
Iโm excited to share my newest work with @benhayden.bsky.social, and the work Iโm most proud of to date, on characterizing semantic coding in single-neuron hippocampal activity in patients with autism during natural language comprehension!

This epic project has been a joy to work on. Congrats to the whole team, but especially Stephan @stephanpohl.bsky.social !
The last year has been an extraordinary journey for us at @elife.bsky.social as we have been establishing a new model of publishing and taken on some of the commercial forces in publishing. We have tried to capture some of the takeaways in this editorial.
So amazing
