early view of my article is out! it explores the twinned ideologies of referentialism that often subtend language and "AI" and how those ideologies break apart in the R&D pipeline, where the social-pragmatic dimension of both speech + data come to the fore rai.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Documents filed this morning by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY exposing how ICE has been lying for a year — not only to the public, but to the courts and to prosecutors — about being authorized to make arrests at 26 Federal Plaza and other immigration courts.

According to documents filed this morning by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY, ICE has been lying for a year — not only to the public, but to the courts and to prosecutors — about being authorized to make arrests at 26 Federal Plaza and other immigration courts. (1/2)
"In the first seven months of his second term, authorities arrested and detained parents of at least 11,000 U.S. citizen children — a number that, if the pace held up, will have roughly doubled by now. That’s an average of more than 50 U.S. citizen kids a day with a parent pulled into detention."
What an incredible story: Meatpacking workers who speak 57 languages are ON STRIKE against the behemoth JBS in Greeley, CO. Reminds me of historical accounts of the Lawrence, Mass. strike of 1912, where workers spoke dozens of languages, and often sang to communicate.
NEW: The Trump administraiton has lost more than 7,000 immigration detention cases in recent months. Increasingly, DOJ is telling judges they have no argument to present or couldn't get facts from ICE to present in court.
A look at this emerging trend.

Looks like a seasonal uptick in migrant encounters at the border. If so, expect March to be greater.

NEW: Rather than turn former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández over to immigration officials when he was released from prison less than four years into a 45-year sentence, the Trump administration paid to transport him 350 miles to a posh NYC hotel.

ICYMI: We @propublica.org set up a tracker for immigration-related habeas cases, which means it tracks the number of suits filed by immigrants claiming they are detained illegally. The number has hit historic highs. We'll update it regularly with new data. projects.propublica.org/habeas-track...
We worked with a great group of students this past summer to pilot the project - we're expanding to more courts and more campuses this semester. Get in touch if you'd like to incorporate immigration court watching into your teaching/research labs.
With Lauren Heidbrink and Luis Guaman, our article "Empty Justice: Ethnographic Court-Witnessing in Authoritarian Times" is out now with preliminary reflections from our ongoing immigration court watching ethnographic research project. anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Lawyers for ICE are increasingly hiding their identities in court. This is completely unprecedented.
“We’re not really doing names publicly,” said Judge ShaSha Xu — after stating her own name and those of the immigrants and their lawyers.

Please reach out if you want to use it in a class (I'd be happy to zoom in and chat with students) or have me come talk about the book.
And to remind us that even when the violence of the anti-immigration agenda has not been as visible as it is in our streets right now, it still destroys lives.
At a moment when the anti-immigration agenda is increasingly violent, I hope this books helps to show that migration is not criminal, pathological, or aberrant.
My first book - on Honduras, migration, and the extended violence of borders - is coming out in March. Preorders are available now through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.org or directly through @ucpress.bsky.social — with a 30% off discount code "UCPSAVE30."

Politicians & some media outlets have latched onto a narrative that recent immigrants, especially undocumented, are causing spikes in crime.
Research does not support the view. In fact, immigrants might have less law enforcement contact compared to native-born Americans.
ICE hired a journalist without a background check, drug test, or anything else. They gave her a six minute interview and then listed her on their website as having joined ICE.
