⚠️ Early-warning and early-response (EWER) systems have become vital tools for preventing violence – but is enough being done to ensure they truly protect civilians? Find out more in this new briefing from HPG's @verobarbelet.bsky.social & @odi.global's Leigh Mayhew: buff.ly/PkXwBqL

📣 OUT NOW: Our new briefing explores the practice of humanitarian evacuation in conflict settings, which is often seen as a last resort due to ethical dilemmas and risks involved. HPG researcher @verobarbelet.bsky.social unpacks in detail, with examples from Ukraine and Syria ⤵️
🚨 THIS WEEK: We're heading to #HNPW, a major humanitarian conference. HPG's @kerrie115.bsky.social, @j0hnbryant.bsky.social, @verobarbelet.bsky.social & Leen Fouad will be exploring the key issues facing our sector in 2025 and beyond – more info + RSVP to join online/in-person → buff.ly/WmUVKHC
Overnight, our worst fears materialized. Again, the people of Gaza living in abject fear.
Modest gains made during the ceasefire – destroyed.
We must not accept the aid blockade.
Here's what I told Security Council:
En Ituri, #RDC l'hôpital général de Fataki, territoire de Djugu, est fermé depuis 14 mars après des attaques laissant 170K personnes sans soins de santé essentiels.
Les parties au conflit doivent protéger les civils et les infrastructures civiles y compris les hôpitaux.
📣 We're heading to Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks!
From 20-27 March, we'll be taking part in a range of discussions to unpack the increasingly pressing issues that currently challenge the humanitarian sector.

In 2024, the DRC was the largest recipient in the world of US humanitarian assistance
In fact, the UN's humanitarian response in the DRC is funded 70% by the US
Yday, @UN_Lemarquis warned that USAID cuts have a severe impact on aid operations to the DRC

There's been a lot of talk lately (and rightly so) about the impact of USAID cuts on the humanitarian sector, but I've seen less about the impact of the US's other directives, such as anti-anything Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Accessibility -- until now: odihpn.org/publication/...
The new US administration’s obsessive, scorched-earth campaign to eliminate anything related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility undermines our sector's commitments to principled humanitarian action, says HPG researcher @verobarbelet.bsky.social. Read on 👉 buff.ly/40Vrds7 #DEIA
Most reporting on the M23 crisis in DR Congo is using mistaken framings, suggesting the conflict is purely driven by a desire to plunder the region’s rich mineral resources. Opinion from @judithverweijen.bsky.social and @ethuin.bsky.social: ⬇️
Just right. Unfortunately
🗣️ “We are scrambling for whatever limited resources that exist now.” How local humanitarian groups are navigating the US aid freeze havoc: ⬇️
Attacking Diversity, Inclusion, Equity is attacking #humanitarian principles! The #US administration systematic erasure of #DEI cannot lead to compromise on impartial and inclusive humanitarian action. Let us not throw under the bus those already pushed behind! Read my new blog on #HPN 👇👇
Shouldn't need saying, but an attack on Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and the Accessibility is an attack on the #humanitarian principles. From @verobarbelet.bsky.social t.bsky.social over at @hpg-odiglobal.bsky.social odihpn.org/publication/...
Just to be clear, in the context of humanitarian assistance, a demand from BHA to halt "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility" initiatives is a direct assault on the humanitarian principle of impartiallity, and should be directly and forcefully called out as such.
⌛ TOMORROW! It's not too late to register to join us for this vital discussion ↓
Thank @prhho.bsky.social! Good to be on a useful social media platform!
Useful work from @hpg-odiglobal.bsky.social looking at how to build more equitable and sustained global north/global south research partnerships on humanitarian action. odi.org/en/publicati...
Let’s face it: colonial power hierarchies & structural racism are rife in the humanitarian sector – and this includes in research partnerships. How do we fix things?
