these days it seems like catching up with old friends is just a 1) litany of peri- or menopausal symptoms, 2) an accounting of midlife caregiving duties and number of chosen fam we’ve got with cancer or other serious illnesses, and 3) sharing of spiritual practices we do to deal with first two.

last week we got a small grant to interpret the legacy of the past 45 years of the black liberation movement in st. louis, & honestly it feels like the most subversive thing we could have possibly managed to do. this both thrills me & breaks my heart (when i think of it as that sort of victory).

dangerous is an appropriate adjective. last month a few of us had a back and forth about some other of his ostensible devil’s advocacy. and again, it’s not just a provocative point. he doubles and triples down. this isn’t child’s play; we are in perilous times.

for example, bazelon should NOT have to explain to him that his own experience is not extendable to the rest of our country’s population. if he just set up the argument for provocative purposes, it would be one thing, but he cuts off others with insane neocon perspectives in a masculinist tone.

i opened up bluesky to see if ANYONE else has an issue with this. WTF has happened to this dude? i’ve been having reactions to him like this regularly; the quality of this podcast is plummeting due to these indulgences. not just bad perspectives, it’s terrible hosting moments. @slate.com

and to be clear, by “broken theirs”, i mean with the processes of disinvestment, segregation, and gentrification organized by white supremicist late capitalism, of course.

when you see another post-industrial city up close and you realize that some other folks have actually broken theirs worse than yours.

this is a bummer. @katmabu.bsky.social was an inspiration through this whole primary season. she was a model for what a campaign could be - community organizing hub, center of political vision, lodestar for party politics. i can’t wait to see what she does next.
