It's a different angle on the issue and the number is so shocking, at first read it seems like it couldn't be true, but it is. It means that almost all the people who alive who have taught in higher ed have done so off the tenure track.
I understand your statistic, but I am talking about the hires, not the postions. Contingent/adjunct faculty are replaced so much more frequently than folks in tenure lines, that the hires is very different. This # also comes from an AAUP report about ten years ago. Probably higher now.
Thank you for calling attention to the decades-old issue of extreme income inequality (it really sucks) in #HigherEducation. Since 1970, more than 90% of higher ed faculty hires have been off the tenure-track.
