The Lower Derwent Valley is one of England's great wetlands, though still relatively little known. Just got my copy of this superb, comprehensive new book on its bird life. Artwork & photos alone make it worth the modest £25 (540 pages, hardback). Details from

Alfred Lion was born on this day April 21, 1908 in Berlin. A jazz concert he attended as a teenager sparked a lifelong passion for the music that would eventually lead him to NYC where he founded Blue Note in 1939. Stream our playlist "Blue Note: The Finest In Jazz" bluenote.lnk.to/BlueNote-The...

cc: @john63kelly.bsky.social - I'm guessing you know this album already (see above) but if not Manu Katché is on a lot of it and I now you're a big fan of his work. www.discogs.com/release/1113...
most welcome. Yeah, it's great. I remember reading it at the time. Like you I just skimmed it now. Will read in full later, also.
Absolute killer of a disco track 💃

Yes, I would watch a documentary of it, too, even though I haven't thought about the album in decade. I'm reading the wikpedia page now. It hints at the process. Seems collaborative in its way.
When I first got it I was working on a special project with one other co-worker. We were isolated in a conference room and played it on a loop for two weeks, at least. I recall us both being surprised by the heavy U2 influence/presence.

Thanks! This has gotten me to pull my Robbie Robertson CD from my shelves. I haven't listened to it in ~35 years.
Jazz OTD: Hank Mobley Day, Part 1 - Recorded April 21, 1957, the aptly named "Hank" has Mobley leading a terrific hard-bop sextet with Donald Byrd (tp), Bobby Timmons (p), Wilbur Ware (b), Philly Joe Jones (d), and John Jenkins (as), whose talent merited more success than he had, sadly. #jazzsky
"Postman Pat, Postman Pat" suddenly becoming the theme about 2½ minutes into Parade will never not be funny

Fascinating stuff from @sarahbrouillette.bsky.social: 'Like public spheres of the past, Substack has created its own proletarianized counter-public: under-employed writers.'

I'm very grateful to author Aymeric Leroy, and publisher Steve Feigenbaum at Cuneiform for sending me this splendidly, weighty tome. It really is the definitive word on the Canterbury Scene. I can't recommend it enough to fans of the genre. Time for a cup of tea, I think.
