Ali Teymoori and I wrote up a piece for @markrubin.bsky.social's excellent Critical Metascience blog. We summarise our new paper on disciplinary crises in psychology and some of the key take-homes for psychologists.
Posts by Rose Trappes
Psychologists tend to go in for changes to methods and statistics. But we argue these crises point to deeper epistemological issues that need to be addressed for the discipline to progress.
We've all heard about the replication crisis in psychology. But psychologists have been calling "crisis" for as long as the discipline has been around. Ali Teymoori and I look at this history and what it means for today's crisis. #philsky doi.org/10.1177/1089...
PhilPapers categorisation update! The 'Feminist Philosophy of Science' leaf has been moved up from the miscellaneous sub-category into the main category of 'General Philosophy of Science' on PhilPapers. 🧡

Inequalities in the funding landscape are actually a major barrier to OA publication. The author-pays model for OA means only those with access to resources get their research out there for all to read for free. OA should become truly open, for authors too! #OpenScience
I especially appreciate the policy to not accuse people of using AI in the comments thread, but to contact the editor instead. The same should apply in peer review.

Median time under review (time intervened from submission to acceptance) of articles indexed in PubMed with a female first author (n = 2,562,262), a male first author (n = 3,405,821), a female corresponding author (n = 975,010), a male corresponding author (n = 1,946,469), a female first author and a female corresponding author (n = 757,878), a male first author and a male corresponding author (n = 1,357,835), all-female authors (n = 650,280), and all-male authors (n = 2,146,799)
Female scientists have to wait longer for their articles to be reviewed than their male colleagues. An analysis of 36.5 million papers in the life sciences shows that for females it took 115 days to reach a decision, compared to 101 days for men journals.plos.org/plosbiology/... @plosbiology.org

THE EPISTEMIC INJUSTICE RESEARCH PROGRAMME: DEGENERATIVE OR PROGRESSIVE?
Deadline 30th of September.
There's a great paper on exactly this by Simon Fokt, which is part of what prompted me to think about making the change philpapers.org/rec/FOKCI
Eventually, we can start thinking about the shape of the category and potential sub-categories, to recognise the diversity of work in this area.
If your work is on or related to feminist philosophy of science, don't forget to add the category when you upload to PhilPapers.
We got the PhilPapers feminist philosophy of science category philpapers.org/browse/femin... moved up from "miscellaneous" to "general philosophy of science" proper 🎉 Combatting disciplinary marginalisation and recognising the strength of feminist work on sciences! #philsky

Despite Prepublication Peer Review being a core part of science, training materials for it are sparse. This open source guide is very valuable for ECRs!

I don't think it's being recorded, unfortunately. But eventually I'll write up a paper about it :)
Tomorrow 6 November is the first of three meetings of the PSA Around the World! A fantastic online program with plenary panel and parallel sessions. All welcome! Note: time zone is 3pm CET.
Thanks to @philsci.bsky.social for supporting online conferencing and its sustainability and accessibility benefits.
Instead of thinking about motivation, I'll look at things like epistemic agency, aesthetics, values, individualism, meritocracy and injustices.
tl;dr Gamification can be great, but we should be careful about what are set up as values and what expectations people get about their agency
Lots of citizen science is gamified: points, scores, leader boards, and even levels. But what does this do to citizen science and its participants? Tomorrow I'll be talking about this online, at the PSA Around the World conference www.philsci.org/psa_around_t...
How to conceptualise research environments for transdisciplinary work? How do researchers negotiate such spaces, and with which implications for knowledge produced? @rosetrappes.bsky.social and I answered by proposing the idea of "multiplex research environments"! See: rdcu.be/eN8ie #philsci
Is #citizenscience exploitative? I gave a talk on this the other week and now you can check it out online. And hopefully soon I'll get around to writing the paper :)
Tomorrow I'll be talking about disciplinary marginalisation. Feminist philosophy of science has moved from the margins to the mainstream. Feminist philosophy isn't niche, and now we know it! But we have to keep up solidarity amongst feminist philosophers of all stripes.
