The other trick we used was to perform the dialogue out loud, as if we were doing bits to each other. You will instantly identify clunky dialogue as soon as you run into it, and this helped us make the lines feel more natural and conversational.

This is one of the writing tricks we used on Loco Motive, after I read this very article! We'd do an initial "shitty little goblin" pass just to have something on the page, and then go back and rewrite it properly. Psychologically it worked to make the writing process a lot easier.

I last attended in 2019, and yeah it didn't have the same energy this year for a number of reasons. The destruction of jobs across media and game development is definitely part of that.
To be fair to the IGF they are generous to the finalists - we were provided free GDC passes, a travel stipend, and the booths are provided at no cost.
We wouldnt have attended otherwise, but we're still talking a few thousand dollars for flights, hotel and existing in an expensive city for a week.
Fair! On our side it was the same time as the Steam coffee morning that we wanted to attend - but felt the press hour would be more important. So we kinda missed out on two things there!
I was going to share my IGF and GDC thoughts but Meredith really nailed it, so just read this.
And yes, it was disappointing to be told press would come speak to IGF finalists, only for not one person in media to show up.

I'll share some more thoughts on GDC and IGF once the dust has settled, but overall I'm feeling very positive that we got the opportunity to meet devs in person and make those connections.
I'd like to think an IGF nomination would open some new doors for us in future, but we'll see what happens?
