don't focus on making it pretty or anatomically perfect or as detailed as possible. just focus on communicating your ideas! the most important parts of comics imo are pacing/timing, and getting the point across legibly, not beauty. beauty is a choice you can make, certainly, but it's just extras

Comics are hard, take ages, no-one respects them, they barely make you any money, and you should still make them.

A futuristic racing driver pulls on their gloves

Cassie Zoom: a character without a story.

I'd love to draw a high-octane racing comic sprinkled with a little Speed Racer, Venus Wars and Redline energy. I've just got to write it. Maybe a zine first.

An Oliver Levang cover for DIRTY ROTTEN COMICS #9 showing a character with a backpack walking through a moody countryside scene. This anthology promoted the work of both emerging UK-based artists and more established ones.

A cover of SOLIPSISTIC POP by Luke Pearson featuring a couple in an intricately geometric pattern. Tom Humberstone was the artist behind this anthology of some of the finest voices in indie and self-published UK comics. Undoubtedly the most influential small press publication of its era.

A party scene from the cover of TEAM GIRL COMIC #10. I can't find a credit for the artist online. Someone help! TGC was as much a community as it was a Scottish comics publication.

The cover of the graphite comics and illustration anthology TINY PENCIL by (I think but someone correct me if I'm wrong!) Bart Nijstad. Always experimental, often dark and ever essential. Founded by Amber Hsu and Katriona Chapman.

There's a whole generation of UK comics self-publishers who are probably totally unaware how much they and the scene owe to those influential 2000s/2010s small press anthologies like SOLIPSISTIC POP, DIRTY ROTTEN COMICS, TEAM GIRL COMIC and TINY PENCIL.

We stand on the shoulders of giants.

If people want to see the slides from that talk, here's a link: shorturl.at/D7vjr

It's not the actual talk, but I think there's some useful info and fun nonsense in there.

No oil means no electricity. No electricity means no water pumps. No running water means no sanitation. No power for hospitals. No fuel for ambulances. No refrigeration for drugs. Mass death soon follows. This is a crime against humanity.
