Inflatables, rainbow crosswalks, flooding snitch lines — creative action was off the charts in 2025 In the face of rising authoritarianism, creativity is an enduring movement superpower that helped us break through the stranglehold of fear this year.

“If signs and symbols didn’t matter, authoritarians wouldn’t strive so desperately to erase history, ban books, remove flags, paint over crosswalks, and suppress any visible sign of diversity.”

Happy pub day to COMMON GROUND by @eileenflanagan.bsky.social! Flanagan weaves together stories of hard won successes in the climate change movement, including against a multinational bank in one case, and a heavily polluting fossil fuel company in another, based on grassroots organizing.

Shout out to @anatosaurus.bsky.social whose work I cite. I discovered her after doing much of my research, and her framing helped to explain some of what I was seeing in climate campaigns.

Repeating "deport" in understandable exhortations "do not deport X" "stop deportations" "end mass deportations" traps us in the opposition's frame and actually reinforces the logic of...deportations. We must say what we're for: "here to stay" "[PLACE] is our home" etc presuppose immigrants belong.
