Artemis 2 annotated.
I’ve been asked a bit over the past week about the ‘astronomy of Artemis 2,’ so I thought I’d annotate two key images from the mission. The crew of Ingenuity had an enviable view as they passed into the shadow of the Moon, with Saturn, Mars, and Mercury arrayed to the observer’s right.

“Moon’s haunted.” - First words from Artemis crew, hopefully. #ArtemisII
Photo of the Orion spacecraft splashing safely into the Pacific Ocean under 3 good parachutes.
Splashdown! Welcome home #ArtemisII 🌍 🚀 🌕

3 good parachutes! #ArtemisII
We can hear the crew!!! #ArtemisII
View from the NASA livestream through the Orion spacecraft window of Earth’s horizon at bottom with hints of bright plasma at top.
The view just before blackout. #artemisII
Entering 6-minute blackout #ArtemsII
That was very cool to watch!!! #artemisII
A view of the Orion Integrity spacecraft with astronaut Jeremy Hansen seen looking out through one of the window.
Jeremy Hansen Takes a Selfie in Orion
Artemis II Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen is seen through a window of the Orion spacecraft, on his way to the Moon. This selfie-style photo was taken using a camera on the end of one of Orion's solar array wings. Credit: NASA.

Oh wow! I did not know that. Awesome! 🇺🇸
Photo of the four Artemis II astronauts behind the flag created for the cancelled Apollo 18 mission. The flag is folded in a triangular shape floating in front of them in the spacecraft.
Wow! The astronauts brought the Apollo 18 flag to space with them. This flag would have been placed on the Moon had Nixon not canceled the program, which ended with Apollo 17. #ArtemisII
Photo of the Milky Way taken by Artemis II astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft showing many stars, nebulae, star clusters and one of the Magellanic Clouds.
NASA just shared a beautiful photo on X of the Milky Way taken from the Orion spacecraft. Some star clusters, colourful nebulae and a Magellanic Cloud visible! 🚀🌌
Via #NASA A better annotated image of the two craters around Mare Orientale that Jeremy Hansen asked to be named "Integrity" after the Artemis II Spacecraft and Carroll Crater, named for the wife of Reid Wiseman, who passed away in 2020 after a 5-year battle with cancer.
Orion is behind the Moon. For the first time in my lifetime, there are humans who cannot see this planet ❤️
Screenshot of the live NASA feed from the Orion spacecraft showing a nearly-quarter moon floating in the blackness of space.
That moon is getting quite big out the window… #ArtemisII
The crew is asking such good questions! #ArtemisII
Screenshot of the NASA online feed showing the Orion spacecraft and moon as captured via one of the cameras mounted outside the craft.
Astronaut Jeremy Hansen describing the moon as VERY bright out the window with lots of brownish hues. Hansen also notes that the farside is “impossibly rugged.” 🚀 🌔
As someone who loves photographing the moon through a telescope I am GEEKING OUT over the detailed conversations about features and topography happening between the spacecraft and the ground! Amazing! 🤩 🌒
Photo of the moon from the Orion spacecraft taken April 6 with some edits (and rotation) done by Andrew Symes.
Nice new photos coming down from the moon with more to come as the flyby begins! Here’s a recent one from today - rotated and edited by me. Original here: flic.kr/p/2s65HsF #ArtemisII
Photo of the Moon taken from The Orion spacecraft showing the near side we see from Earth along with some of the far side including the Orientale basin, a nearly 600-mile-wide crater that straddles the Moon’s near and far sides and is partly visible from Earth.
I edited one of the moon photos shared by NASA today using the processes I use on my own lunar photos to bring out additional detail. Familiar yet foreign! #ArtemisII
#NASA #ArtemisII - Here is a NASA graphic outlining all the milestones for tomorrow.
Photo of a small crescent Earth against the blackness of space. Taken through the window of the Orion spacecraft.
The Earth is getting smaller and smaller out the window! Here’s a new photo from the Orion spacecraft taken today, April 5, and released by NASA this afternoon. #ArtemisII 🌍 🚀 🌕
girl take us with you
#NASA #ArtemisII - Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen getting his chance to fly "Integrity" with Christina Koch in the co-pilot's chair and Victor Glover, with a camera recording the event can be seen in the lower right. Hansen reporting back on the vehicle's performance.
Photo of the moon taken from the Orion spacecraft en route to the moon.
The astronauts already have a slightly different view of the moon than we do! In their recent photo you can see Mare Orientale on the western limb, which is not visible from Earth! #ArtemisII 🚀 🌕
