Calgarians, hope you’re cool with multigenerational housing because our kids are never moving out. #yyccc
Update: Council will now only allow the building of single family homes, and only single family homes, in ~68% of the city.
It's a blanket ban on building housing.
Just another blanket. This time, snuffing out affordability.

The vote on citywide rezoning has ended.
Below is an excerpt of my debate before the vote, where I spoke about what we heard, who we didn't hear, and why we must focus on the future.
Growth isn’t optional — it’s already happening. Time to move forward together.

That’s so disappointing.
Calgary feeder main update happening now. Key elements:
1) Calgary is consuming more water than it can produce.
2) Critical that Calgarians, industry conserve water. Target is achievable.
3) No measurable reduction in water consumption yet observed.
4) Support impacted businesses, neighbours.
Added a bunch more to The Sprawl's Calgary budget tracker and will add more today! See how council members voted on housing, transit, climate, the Old Y and more in an easy-to-digest format. #yyccc
Me on a candlelit vigil for AIDS in 1987.
Me last week. Looking pretty healthy for 58 (28 years living with HIV).
I was diagnosed with #HIV in 1998, when I was 30.
Many of my friends had died of AIDS. I did not expect to live to 50.
I’m 58 now.
HIV treatment works.
Treatment also makes it impossible for me to pass HIV on during sex.
Ensure HIV treatment for all.
End HIV stigma.

Agreed. But they do cause vacancy chains which helps. Building more housing of any kind is only one of the levers that gets us to affordability. Investing in non-market housing is where the city needs to go next.
The people who move into these condos come from somewhere and they can afford it. That opens up both rental and purchase properties at likely lower price points.
That said we need more non market housing in all parts of the city.

The people moving into these homes come from somewhere. So simply by moving into these newer more expensive homes, they are likely open housing supply at a lower price point for other people to move into. The best part is those lower price points could be rental units or market value homes.

Regardless of statistics showing crime is dwindling, safety is a major concern for Calgarians—why?
In my latest essay, i explore this question, alongside the implications of letting our bourgeois fears guide our city’s policy agenda.
Watch: Terms like R1 and R2 vanished when blanket rezoning came to Calgary, and the city says it's meant there's been rapid growth of new homes.

We like to complain that Calgary wants to pave over our past and that developers don’t care about our heritage buildings. So here’s your chance to save a bit of history.
Ooofff. I feel that. Ben stuck a mini whistle in his nose when he was three. We couldn’t figure out where the subtle sound was coming from until bed time. Really long tweezers saved the day.
🐎 CAVALRY WIN!
It’s their first dub of the season, holding off York’s late surge to take it 2-1.
Very chippy match, yellow cards everywhere. But Warschewski and Aird made the best of their moments to score.
Cavs head home happy.

"If you haven't been there, go to Calgary" - Diana Matheson
I'm obviously biased, but I think Calgary is the most underrated soccer city in Canada. What's been pulled out of thin air in the last 10 years is nothing short of remarkable. And we get very little credit for it from elsewhere.
Great candidate and a Calgary Wild hoodie. No notes. Fantastic day!

It'll probably fly under the radar in the Canadian sports landscape (as most #CanPL news does), but last night's 2-1 win by Cavalry FC over Mexican giants Pumas is a huge moment for domestic soccer in the country
I have waited for ever for this moment. I am so proud of the @cavalryfc.
Preach. It’s such a nice feeling.
