the side-lip with buttons is really nice for one-handed use (as opposed to a lot of the other models that are more touch-screen-y), and it's been pretty banged up over the years and still works flawlessly if that's any further vouch. seems to be discontinued entirely but ebay/fb might have your back

i'm very happy with my kobo libra 2 (b&w, the color one is weird apparently), if you can snag a used one for cheap?

retiring from computer touching* just to become an osr weirdo

*computer touching will continue but only for the purposes of optimizing hex map rendering and extremely advanced dice roll bots

very unfortunate people are blaming bluesky's instability on "vibe coding" when all available evidence points to it being a human's fault. specifically rob pike

who needs real devkits when you can buy full devices with the correct parts off aliexpress and hope they forgot to change the bootloader signing key from the github repo they cloned the firmware from (success rate: 2 of 2)

i guess there's the official nordic eval board but i am allergic to buying the correct hardware for anything ever. also they're kind of expensive

i found exactly one board (pitaya go) that has an antenna connector, i bought one years ago, somehow managed to kill it, and now it's discontinued everywhere:/

related to prev: kind of sad/annoying that the nfc module on the nrf52840 seems consistently neglected by dev board makers? adafruit, arduino, etc all list "nfc" in the spec list, but never have any examples, never include antennas, and usually don't even expose the correct pins??? cmon

i can't figure out how this actually works hardware-wise? the rider half only has an extremely tiny chip, the cart half has a slightly larger one, but the data is clearly stored *in the rider* somehow? would help if i could solder onto the pogo pins but they're annoyingly resistant

left side: a small white pcb with six metal contacts
right side: a circular flat nfc antenna connected by two word to another small white pcb, showing the back side of a set of pogo pins that match up with the other side's contacts

the nfc antenna is in the cart half, connected via pogo pins to something in the rider that actually stores the data. it's an ntag i²c plus 2k, and sending a command through the sram buffer returns some kind of data identifying what cart it's on

here's a bonus fact: native instruments' older auth method (ras2, mostly deprecated but still used a little) uses 112-bit ecdsa, seemingly because they wanted to pack an entire signature into a 25-char product key. that's ~56 bits of security, aka. crackable by a small gpu cluster if you're bored:)

i *have* been reverse engineering various "download managers" (ie. native access, etc) because those tend to be piles of garbage, and that wouldn't allow downloading/activating anything you don't already own anyway, so maybe that's fairer game?

i assume there's a pretty good reason people don't usually put their software cracks on github

4 months ago 4 0 1 0

yay: finally doing things interesting enough to write about and publish

...but it's about cracking my pro audio software (or, reimplementing the auth to make it work on wine), so maybe i shouldn't, that seems irresponsible

always get stuck in the endless pit of "if i publish something it must be new and novel and interesting otherwise what's the point" -> i learn something novel or interesting to me -> "i should write about this" -> "well now i understand it so it's no longer novel or interesting, what's the point"

getting my website back in order might be a good first step (i think i lost the keys to deploy to it at some point)? always have this idea that a blog post needs to be a big whole thing with structure and be comprehensive, but i guess it can just be a paragraph or two about a tiny idea?

5 months ago 1 0 1 0

oh, sure! hmu!

5 months ago 2 0 0 0

been trying! at this point i'm sorta feeling out topics and if anything can actually assemble itself into a sensible "unit" rather than incoherent mess of ideas, and so far that hasn't happened yet, but looking out?
(although that might also be a beginner trap, waiting for something...)
