Olivia Laing in a "love letter" to John Berger at his death in 2017: The "impetus towards kindness & care for the sick & strange, the vulnerable & dispossessed is everywhere in Berger's work, the sprawling orchard of words planted & tended over the decades."

Getting a PhD and then working outside academia is dope. My advisees who’ve done that are more or less uniformly happy and feel that they’re using the skills they trained on. (I talked to one today who just landed a great gig). Just wanted to convey that to anyone it might benefit.
Or is it that, under Trumpism, real estate is war & politics by other means?
Or is it that, under Trumpism, real estate is war & politics by other means?
I keep thinking about Clausewitz’s “war is politics by other means” & Foucault’s inversion “politics is the continuation of war by other means.” Now we are seeing politics & war as real estate by other means.
“It’s a bit like the acceleration of the climate crisis; nobody knows how to build a system resilient enough to handle a ‘storm of the century’ every year. Nobody knows how to properly communicate about, & respond to, the ‘exploit of the year’ if it’s happening every 6 hours.” Yikes.
We are in the most corrupt & inept timeline. I think this says it all: "Even though some proclaimed Mandelson’s appointment as the UK’s latest 'Trump whisperer' a stroke of genius at the time, the risks were always clear."

“I have apps to warn me away from people like you.” People need apps to warn them about people wearing "pervert glasses"?
I also liked these elements. You really can't argue that Salis lacks broad appeal and political instincts.
An Olympian who wears Blahniks!?! Come on.

I love when Schulman asks Iris Long, "What did your friends and family think? That you were spending all your time on AIDS?" & Long answers, "Well, I had new friends, that’s all."
Things down here are, to my knowledge, the most extreme example of higher education censorship currently in force. They’ve banned almost all content on sexual orientation and gender in teaching, and, in a startling low, grad student research. It’s unconscionable, offensive, and wrong.
A Ugandan and Kenyan read to children!
(that is the only way I can appreciate that picture and remain anticolonial)

“Unserious leaders are unsafe. There is nothing more serious than our leaders’ dedication to the rule of law so that we might maintain the integrity of our constitutional democracy,” Judge Mustafa Kasubhai not pulling punches on how unserious, & also dangerous, RFK Jr’s ideology is.
RIP Iris Long. Sarah Schulman's interview with her for the ACT UP Oral History Project is definitely worth watching... www.actuporalhistory.org/numerical-in...
Techno party NOT technofascism: "The techno party didn’t happen by chance. Genoa’s council footed the bill as part of Salis’s strategy to use public space for free events to promote social inclusion & urban renewal, especially for younger residents."
And this: "Salis is also admired for the way she has handled sexist comments & criticism, including those over her dancing in Manolo Blahnik heels, to which she responded by saying she supports leftwing values but just wants to dress well."
This: "Salis raised her profile through her participation in protests last autumn against the war in Gaza, & by supporting port workers who blocked shipments of weapons destined for Israel."
Politics as rave: "The party was also symbolic, contrasting with Meloni’s 'anti-rave' decree, which clamped down on unauthorised gatherings in one of the first laws enacted by her government after coming to power in October 2022."
Techno party NOT technofascism: "The techno party didn’t happen by chance. Genoa’s council footed the bill as part of Salis’s strategy to use public space for free events to promote social inclusion & urban renewal, especially for younger residents."
"Dancing on stage with [DJ Charlotte] De Witte was Genoa’s sunglasses-clad mayor, Silvia Salis, a former Olympic hammer thrower widely mooted as a plausible challenger to Meloni in the next general election. Footage of the event rapidly circulated online, amplifying Salis’s profile."

Conscious uncohosting?
Oh, that's good! 😂
Rapinoe & Bird have always been trendsetters, so I expect podcast breakup announcement to be a new trend.
I'd estimate 50% for me too, which is why when I show films in class, I'm sometimes the only one in the room crying...
