Mario & Luigi: Brothership contains an extremely cute model of a decorative baby penguin that appears only outside the playable area and is never seen up close. Below is a detailed view of the model to appreciate the penguin.

"Freedom from Adobe’s app ecosystem is actually starting to look plausible. And making that freedom increasingly free is the icing on the cake."

Two of the most exciting sentences I've read all year.

Unhinged thought that flowed through my brain when I was trying to fall back asleep this morning:

The rabbit is the sixth largest land vertebrate, after
1. Blue whale
2. Giraffe
3. Sand crab
4. Porcupine

At our seders, inspired by the one year we had a herpetologist guest, I invite attendees to speak in praise of frogs just after the plagues bit.

If nobody has anything nice to say about frogs, I read them an abridged version of this weird lil story: sacred-texts.com/jud/jftl/jft...

You can't separate anti-immigrant and anti-trans politics from what is happening with Iran. When MAGA picked transphobia and nativism as its organizing principle, it selected for the capacity to treat entire categories of people as civilizational threats whose elimination is an act of self-defense.

One of my former students took her final project for my field natural history class and turned it into her Honors thesis: a 100% original, hand-drawn field guide to the rocky intertidal! And she got copies printed for her defense!

and i have to explain how i would give a mortally injured songbird the gentlest death possible

and what a different world i inhabit that i consider the last moments of a being that weighs a few grams while others casually desire to end millions of lives

So fun fact, you don't need any AI to build a custom feed. I made a tutorial here that covers everything you need to know to make a basic feed using SkyFeed!

The advice is meant for artists looking to build a personal art feed, but anyone can use it for general feeds.

“Gift of the Pari” is the cover I painted for @khoreo.bsky.social ! It was a huge honor! With Nowruz being today, it wanted to share. Pari are winged supernatural being in Iranian mythology. I wanted to paint them as birds with human faces, surrounded by saffron crocuses and jasmine. Happy Nowruz. 🌸

A six panel comic. In panel 1, a banner says "Pigeons make milk" and a smaller banner says "A fact you didn't need to know". A pigeon stands looking at the reader next to a carton of milk. In panel 2, the text says "Like mammals, pigeons feed milk to their babies. Both male and female pigeons produce it." Two pigeons sit next to their pink and gray babies, all looking happy, and one of the parents says, "Teamwork." In panel 3, the text says "Pigeons don't have nipples. They make milk in a part of their esophagus and regurgitate it." Two pigeons stand next to each other, one with a cow udder and one with a line of nipples down its chest, with red X's next to them. In panel 3, the text says "Amazingly, it evolved independently from mammal milk but it's triggered by the same hormone, prolactin." A black and white dairy cow looks down at a pigeon, who says "We're not so different, you and I." In panel 5, the text says "Like our milk, it has fats, proteins, immune-supporting substances, and more." A cow foot and a pigeon wing are shown high-fiving, and text says "milk high five". In panel 6, the text says "However, it's very chunky, so don't trust any pigeon to make you a good latte." A white coffee cup steaming with a latte inside is shown with the contents censored, and a pigeon leans into the frame looking proud of itself.

Many journals require data and code sharing. Yet code is still rarely shared and datasets are often hard to reuse.

Our new paper introduces the @sortee.bsky.social guidelines for data & code quality control in ecology & evolution, developed by 26 experienced data editors.
