In this new study, @dogagingproject.bsky.social identified overlapping metabolites linked to a subset of dogs and human mortality, supporting dogs as a compelling model for studying human aging. doi.org/10.1093/gero... @academic.oup.com
But it took just 2 years of Dog Aging Project data to discover these biomarkers, instead of the 10-20 years typically needed in human studies. Yet another reason why we love dogs!

It turns out that metabolite predictors of mortality in dogs overlap significantly with those in humans.

Here's the latest call for proposals from the Morris Animal Foundation @morrisanimal.bsky.social. Lots of options, including a new opportunity for established investigators interested in #cancer, #aging and #longevity.

Adapted from Axelsson et al. 2013 Fig 2c: Histogram showing the distribution of diploid amylase copy number in wolf (n=35, blue) and dog (n=136, red). Dogs carry more copies of the starch-digesting gene AMY2B than wolves. Additional copies make dogs better than wolves at digesting starchy foods like grains & vegetables.
Dogs evolved to eat your leftovers! Comparing dog & wolf genomes revealed dogs have up to 30 EXTRA copies of the amylase gene (AMY2B) that helps digest starch. This is a key genomic signature of living alongside humans & table scraps for thousands of years 🐕 www.nature.com/articles/nat... #2026MMM
Interested in metabolomics/systems biology and aging in Drosophila? We have a post-doc opening! And of course, there will be plenty of opportunities for side projects on the @dogagingproject.bsky.social. 🐶

Many years ago, I accidentally published a paper where I said “it is worth nothing” instead of “it is worth noting”. Only me to blame…
I'm looking forward to speaking on CBC's The Current this morning all about dogs and aging! 🐕 🇨🇦@dogagingproject.bsky.social
I'm very happy to see this paper now out. We used early-life climbing ability to separate genetically identical short-lived and long-lived sub-cohorts of fruit flies, and to identify metabolites and metabolite modules that predict longevity.

I think people adjacent to science (but who now find themselves deciding the fate of US science somehow) undervalue humility, valuing braggadocios hubris instead.
Yes it’s true that some scientific discoveries are complete paradigm changers, and we celebrate these. 1/
The Dog Aging Project is alive and well, in part due to support from the 501(c)3 non-profit Dog Aging Institute. Thanks for your support!

Implementation of Schedule F
This is what a lot of us have been worried about.
This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs.
BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD...

For mortality rather than prevalence, you could use CDC data, such as the age/sex results summarized here www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes...
