This is the final chapter of my dissertation, supported by the National Institute on Aging! 10 states now have conscientious objection laws for health care providers, and these laws were associated with lower HIV testing rates and worse health among LGBQ+ folks.

🔧Tweaking the system and increasing uptake of preventive care for LGBTQ+ people improves their quality of life—and saves the American health system $$$ in the long run.
📏States with more health systems that participate in the @hrc.org's Healthcare Equality Index have more LGBTQ+ patients reporting affirming care experiences. This is ONE pragmatic way your health system can better support LGBTQ+ patients.
✅ LGBTQ+ patients with affirming care reported highest rates of colorectal cancer screening, flu vaccination, and HIV testing.
📉Patients with neutral or discriminatory care were less likely to receive at least one high-value preventive service recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force.

Among 954 LGBTQ+ adults, we identified 3 patterns of healthcare experiences:
✅ 34% affirming care
➖ 60% neutral care
❌ 6% discriminatory care
Patients with affirming patterns of care reported highest rates of preventive care.
