My 80yo dad is driving a small but sturdy clunker to his and others' peril (it's a Honda Accord from the 90s) for this reason. If it had been easier to change a decade ago, there would've been that much less risk on the road for everyone, though it wouldn't have solved the headlight height problem.

Beautiful afternoon off the coast of Six-Fours-les-Plages, France. I am grateful.

The principal ...recalled the final day of [middle] school two years ago, when an all-grade online rock-paper-scissors tournament devolved into Lord of the Flies. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much lying, cheating, meanness or crying.... We had to end the game early.”

Wild. I'd never have known. Not sure the phenomenon exists outside the US, and a specific kind of socioeconomic stratum at that, but would be interested to hear otherwise.

In a related field, I confirm. "The technology can be reprogrammed for different diseases by inputting a short stretch of genetic code that tells the molecular machinery exactly where to make its correction. Build the system once, & you can redirect it to a new disease by changing that one piece."

Honestly, we all like to raise our kids like ourselves (or at least as some function thereof) & to be culturally adapted. I don't fault them for that but for unjustified fear of general society & anything "other". It takes (missing) courage to have an open mind about challenging one's convictions.

The world’s oldest chicken lives in Portland. Her name is Gertie. Guinness World Records has recognized a blind, jazz-loving, 15-year-old hen in Portland as the oldest living chicken on Earth.

None of them are sinning by too much humility, a prosocial virtue lauded, I believe, in Matthew 5:5.

It's no accident that homeschooling and "school choice" is so popular among the same population segment.

We managed to survive the Raoult-inflicted damage. Unfortunately not everyone can say the same and I will remain angry about it until I die (or at least until I retire as I have to look at monuments to his ego every day I go to work @univ-amu.fr ). But cocorico I guess? Now boot Kennedy ASAP.

The $79 Trillion Heist - The American Prospect We’re in an affordability crisis because workers aren’t being paid at the same levels they earned in the past.

“Had that bottom 90 percent continued during the past half-century to make the same share of the national income they’d had in 1975, RAND calculates that by 2023 they would have made an additional $79 trillion.” @prospect.org

I just learned yesterday about www.affinity.studio/en from a web designer friend. Apparently if you stay away from the AI option you can get a permanent license like in the good old days. I have 3 or more made-useless purchased Photoshop versions on CD before starting to rent my copy each year 😡

As a scientist with little taste for jurisprudence & social questions (rhetoric), this was a fantastic philosophical read. Thanks to the author & even the instigator of the initial discussion, as reductionist & perhaps naïve (& piled-on?) as she found she had been. Absolute vs. relative truths.

Just check here bsky.app/settings/app... and delete any that are there. At worst you'll be prompted for a reset down the road.

You can both be right. A decade of Trumpism out of a young person's life, +pandemic, is a lot. Younger folks can't project easily into 2008 crash, no matter how empathetic, or into other crises from before their consciousness. My dad's experience with friends dying in Vietnam for naught also sucked.
