OOO very good picture!
(also sorry if you got multiple notifications for this, I accidentally originally replied to a different one of your posts, and redid them replying to this one)
also also on top of that, in the same github page the guy says the research period is "2026-03-11 to present" So this guy started researching less than a week ago, and came up with all of this. Does this not seem just a lil bit weird?
also to add on, after looking at the source. the redditor who made all of this claims to be using claude code to parse data and search, which you can see in the methodology section either here or by following the link in your article to the reddit post
tboteproject.com/git/hekate/a...
so if an application doesn't legally require any sort of age verification, then they are not legally allowed to request the signal. At least that's how it seems with how it's written
If meta is doing this to create some sort of api net for age identity, I don't think AB-1043 as written really helps for that.
In section 1798.501 the text says that any sort of signal being sent or requested has to be the minimum amount needed to comply
So if it could be argued that the Calfornia law benefited you would that change your opinion on it?
Do you extend that logic to funding public education? Should child free houses be required to pay taxes to fund public schools? That is a much bigger burden than requiring a fake bday be put in on people's devices for example.
If it's all consistent and compliant and easy for the user then the truthfulness of the age is all on the User of the application. If a kid accesses content they should not in this case, and everyone is compliant with the law, then it will be on the parent in that case.
It's not useless though. the reason I see it as is that this creates a legal contract between OS and any Application. The OS provides the minimum amount of info (via age bracket instead of direct age) the application can take that as a source of truth and trust it without needing like any IDs
It's an age field on the user account, which for all intents and purposes you could put jan 1 1900 or age 99 in from how the calfornia bill reads. That's not really at all the same as having 2 non-removable child safety seats.
Beyond that too, if there is no consistency being enforced then like how can we ever reasonably expect liability to fall more on the parents?
Well then what happens if, for example, next year Microsoft then just says, "Nah we change our mind, we've deprecated this feature now"?
That would be kind of screwing over the consumer in this case.
I mean would you make this same argument against like the GDPR?
And also shifts responsibility for parents too. because if they complain like "MY CHILD SAW XYZ!" and it turns out the account the kid was on said it was over 18. Then that's on the parent according to my reading of this legislation. Like not any legal penalties to them, just can't sue anyone.
To my layman understanding, it seems like the point is to put responsibility more onto the parents. Like an age over 18 might not truely mean the user is over 18, but one under 18 would be a strong enough signal to deny the person. It's a tool more for parents.
If it's like the California bill though, it seemed like all it is, is an age field for a user account on the OS level, that you can put any date in. The OS then would anonymize the age into brackets. It seems more like an option for parents to have, since it's more age attestation
You're pretty cool
