Jacob Ashworthy stepped off his sled as it pulled up to the gates of his manor, handing the reins to his manservant. “Nothing like a holiday sled ride to get the blood flowing,” he said with a chuckle. To wield the power, the wearer had to feel the cold. The snow was stinging the girl viciously, made even worse because her skin couldn’t grow numb to it. Her muscles were protected from injury, but not from exhaustion. Dragging the sled for miles in sub-zero temperatures was a torturous experience. Just as Ashworthy preferred. He patted the girl on the head, seeing her defeated eyes. “Put her in the stables,” he told his manservant. “Maybe we’ll go out again this afternoon.” He strolled past, smiling at the low whine of protest from behind him as he entered into the warmth of his home.
