The image shows some rugged coast at lower right, with some clouds over the land. Most of the rest of the image shows intricate patterns of lines, swirls and blobs, and a ship and its wake behind it at top. Sunglint, sunlight reflecting off a body of water, can reveal shallow structures on the surface of the water, when viewed under the right angle. Every once in a while an astronaut takes a picture like this one, and it always reveals fascinating details. The surface of the sea is not flat, but constantly being shaped by wind and small and large currents and swirls which are called eddies (small ones) or gyres (big ones).
No images taken from space station #ISS on 26 November 2025 are available yet, so instead this one, taken by astronaut Takuya Onishi on 7 August of his year, showing sunglint off the sea near northwestern Corsica. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS END

The image shows a starry sky with a nebula below centre. At bottom red airglow over a curved Earth horizon is visible. The sky is full of stars, but some points of light could be electronic noise. Astronauts aboard ISS have been taking ever increasing numbers of night images (astronomical, aurora, thunderstorms, cities) and night timelapses.
On 25 Nobember 2024 astronaut Don Pettit took this image from space staation #ISS of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small companion galaxy to our Milky Way, from over northwestern Tchad. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS
The image shows a night view of Egypt, with the lighted winding Nile valley in the centre, Cairo and the Nile delta twoards upper left, Israel, Lebanon and Amman in Jordan at top centre, the Sinai peninsula, the northern part of the Red Sea and part of Saudi Arabia above centre and to the right. At upper left is part of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. At top is the blckness of space over the curved horizon of the Earth. Even at night the desert has a brown tan. At lower right some small lights are visible. These are from the New Toshka City. This is a development in the desert, west of Lake Nasser, and part of the New Valley Project, an ambitious plan to develop the southwestern desert of Egypt into an agricultural and housing area, to lift the pressure off the heavily populated Nile valley.
On 24 November 2023 astronaut Lorel O'Hara took this (enhanced) image during a short timelapse. The night view beautifully shows the Nile Valley in Egypt, full of lights from settlements. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS
The image shows irregular shaped long islands with a torqouise coloured sea next to them. Some parts of the ocean are deep blue. There are also some small clouds scattered over the area.

Above the centre of the image a large field of snow and ice on the top of the southern Andes mountains is visible, almost stretching over the entire width of the scene. Below this field several arge lakes are visible. At the top of the image are dense clouds over the Pacific Ocean, and snow capped mountains in southern Chile. In the lower part of the image long almost parallel bands of clouds are visible over the brownish landscape of southern Argentina.
On 22 November 2021 astronaut Matthias Maurer took this image from space station #ISS. We see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field on the border of Argentina and Chile (in the distance). Lago Argentino is left of centre. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS
The image shows a city at night. One can see a broad dark track from bottom to top. This is the canalised Danube river. Zooming in shows you a smaller winding river which actually passes near the inner city. This is the Danube Canal. Both are waterworks from the 19th century, although canalization of the Danube started already late in the 16th century (according to Wikipedia). The Danube used to meander in a wide flat flood plain and over time moved away from old Vienna. So "the beautiful blue Danube" was something from the past.
On 21 November 2020 an astronaut aboard space station #ISS took this nighttime image of Vienna (Wien), the capital of Austria. More in the alt-text. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS
The image shows only clouds, and just one type of cloud: stratus. At first imression one would think to see clouds at different levels, but this ia just an optical illusion. This low thin type of cloud in a wide variety of patterns is almost permanently present over the eastern parts of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic and Pcific Ocean. In total this cloud type covers about twenty percent of the subtropical and tropical oceans. They reflect sunlight, cooling the earth. If these clouds would disappear, earth would get warmer. Therefore meteorologists and climatologists are particular interested in these clouds.
On 20 November 2019 an astronaut aboard space station #ISS took this image of stratus clouds north of Isla San Ambrosio in the Juan Fernรกndez archipelago in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS

The image shows a city on a river (the Hunter River) at the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Above centre to to upper left in the image light coloured dunes stretch along the coast. The astronauts aboard ISS live by Universal Time. All their images carry a UT timestamp. When taking images late in the evening on UT, the next day has already started over East Asia, Australia and the western Pacific Ocean region.
No Earth images were taken from space station #ISS on 19 November 2018. However, ISS circles the globe 16 times a day, flying over all time zones. Newcastle, NSW, Australia, was imaged on the 19th local time. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS

The image shows a nighttime view of earth with many city and road lights in the lower part of the image. At top green veils of aurora stretch towards the curved horizon of earth. On this day, 18 November 2017, only nighttime timelapses were shot from the space station. Auroras are a favourite subject for astronauts to take timelapses of. The videos made from these timelapses are always wonderful to see. At the average height of around 420 kilometres above earth ISS when reaching its highest inclination of 51.7 degrees at times passes almost over the green auroras since these are formed at lower altitudes. Sometimes when looking at the videos it looks like the station is even flying through them.
On 18 November 2017 an astronaut aboard space station #ISS took this image of aurora borealis from over southwestern Canada. The brightest city in the image is Edmonton, Alberta. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS

The image shows a feathery field of altocumulus clouds in the centre left part of the image. The field is casting a shadow on its lower part. At the edges of the image hazy parts of land around the bay are visible. I like these kinds of images very much, because is shows the keen eye of an astronaut spotting such a small wonder of nature.

The image shows a large number of round dots in a desert. The dots are circular crop fields. These fields are being irrigated from a rotating beam of sprinklers, feeded by ground water pumped up in the centre.
On 16 November 2015 an astronaut aboard space station #ISS took this image of pivot irrigation fields near Wadi ad Dawasir (centre left) in Saudi Arabia. Th image shows a night view of a big city partially obscured by clouds. On 13 November 2012 the astronauts aboard ISS took 299 night images, of cities and thunderstorms. Only a few are more or less sharp. All the rest is either out of focus or unsharp because of motion blur. The speed of ISS relative to earth is high and night imaging needs relative long exposure times. Nowadays the astronauts have much better cameras with extremely high ISO settings and mounts to compensate for the station's speed.
On 13 November 2012 an astronaut aboard space station #ISS took this night image of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Night photography from ISS was quite a challenge in the early days of station. More on that in the alt-text. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social #25YearsOnISS
